Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, in collaboration with City of Brampton, has made a significant stride towards Canada’s 30x30 target by contributing over 1,900 hectares of natural heritage lands. This vital effort protects biodiversity and secures a sustainable future for our ecosystems. With assessment support from Ontario Nature, Brampton’s Natural Heritage System (NHS) − including gems like Claireville Conservation Area, Heart Lake Conservation Area, and Conservation Drive Park − now meets national standards. These areas play a vital role in air and water purification, flood reduction and even serve as habitats for at-risk species, like the redside dace and the northern map turtle. Collaboration between municipalities and conservation authorities is critical. Together, we can protect our natural spaces, enhance biodiversity, and build resilience against climate change. TRCA was thrilled to welcome MP Taylor Roy to Bathurst Glen Golf Course to meet our Canada Summer Jobs staff. The Federal Canada Summer Jobs Program provides important funding to TRCA to help us maintain our sites for the enjoyment of visitors, offer popular programs, and train the next generation of environmental professionals. MP Taylor Roy also learned about the environmental best management practices that TRCA has implemented at Bathurst Glen and how we share these learnings with others. The Thornhill SNAP Community Champion Network (TSCCN) came together this week for a fun filled social event in celebration of their hard work and dedication! Members participated in games and activities and learned about the importance of renewable energy from an industry expert. TSCCN is a joint initiative between the City of Vaughan and TRCA's Thornhill SNAP, and part of the broader Community Champion Program developed by TRCA's SNAP team. Exciting discovery: Spotted Gar found in Toronto waters! 🐟 During a recent night electrofishing survey, TRCA made an incredible find - a Spotted Gar! This marks the first record of this fish species in over 30 years of waterfront fisheries surveys in the region. The Spotted Gar is both an endangered and unique native fish, known for its long snout and spotted body. This ancient and primitive fish species has the ability to breathe air, and its sharp teeth demonstrate its role as a top predator. This discovery underscores the need to continue to monitor and understand the biodiversity of our local waters so we can make informed decisions about how to best safeguard habitat for fish communities.
