Introducing Thunderbird Rainwater Solutions, a dedicated team of third-year students in the #UBCEngineering Environmental program: Elizabeth Liu (team lead), Benjamin Buchheit, Nicolas Cho, Claire Merchant, and Harshvardhan Shaw. Guided by faculty advisor Dr. Madjid Mohseni (UBC Chemical & Biological Engineering) and industry advisor Leigh Borrett (Urban Systems), this innovative group is making significant strides in sustainable design. Their 'Triple-Prong' project proposal addresses stormwater quality and flood management in Vancouver's Olympic Village through blue-green infrastructure. This design repurposes traffic medians into biofiltration cells, revitalizes local green spaces, and includes an artificial wetland to restore the shoreline. After winning the BC Water & Waste Association student design competition, they presented their work at the BCWWA Trade Show and placed second at the Water Environment Federation's Technical Exhibition and Conference in New Orleans. Their approach blends engineering with Indigenous ways of knowing for a more sustainable future. 🌍

Meet Marcus, a UBC Civil Engineering student who took a unique path to #UBCEngineering! After high school, Marcus deferred his university entry for several years to pursue his passion for ski-racing. As a member of the BC team, he aimed for the World Cup circuit, but after three years, decided it was time to transition to a new challenge—starting school again. "It was a crazy transition," Marcus shared, "I hadn’t touched a school book for a long time!" Though the adjustment was tough at first, he soon found his footing after meeting new friends and settling in. Read more: bit.ly/3YJyY4N

Huge thanks to Teck Resources Limited for partnering with #UBC to create the Teck Professorship in Tailings Management and Innovation at the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering. Teck water, tailings and operations team members recently met with the inaugural professorship holder, Dr. Luis Alberto Torres-Cruz, to discuss his hopes and plans for the role, and to celebrate this big step forward in mining tailings research. This influential professorship will bring new perspectives and multidisciplinary research towards improving tailings management to prevent failures and reduce ecological impacts. Dr. Torres-Cruz will be collaborating closely with the industry to develop innovations in the field that will have far reaching environmental, social and economic benefits. He believes that fluid communication between industry and academia is crucial to addressing the challenges and opportunities related to tailings. We are incredibly grateful to Teck for supporting this professorship and we look forward to jointly leading important progress in how mines manage tailings—for the benefit of our communities, the mining industry and our planet.
