The new Canada Public Land Bank, which identifies federally-owned land for possible #affordablehousing developments, has been launched. The work to map public land and make it available for more affordable housing is one we've been working on and advocating for since the launch of the HART project. This week the HART team were thrilled to host Victorian Planning and Environmental Law Association from Australia at our offices to talk about the HART project and learn about shared challenges and opportunities to #housing policy in Canada and Australia.

As more data is collected and shared about #housing, it becomes clearer and clearer that a supply only approach will not address our crisis. New townhomes are not accessible to the nearly quarter million #homeless individuals in Ontario. Nor are fourplexes serving over 35k households in Vancouver who can only afford $1,000/month. "[Investor-driven housing] is a Ponzi scheme that falls apart when prices aren’t increasing rapidly." While policy still incentivizes this kind of small-scale, profit-driven investment, it will be even more difficult to achieve widespread affordability.

Canadians rank housing affordability as the "most important issue" right now, with nearly 50% of respondents ranking it in their top three concerns, according to Leger's July survey. 50% of mortgage holders have reported an increase in monthly payments in recent years, while 70% of renters reported increased rents.
