The official account for the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
About us
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992 and entered into force on 29 December 1993. It is the first global agreement to cover all aspects of biological diversity: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), based in Montreal, Canada, was established to support the goals of the Convention. Its primary functions are to organize meetings, prepare reports, assist member governments in the implementation of the various programmes of work, coordinate with other international organizations and collect and disseminate information.

As Paris celebrates with the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games, behind the scenes, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and #Paris2024 Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games have committed to take action to protect nature. This is the first @Olympics to take place since the establishment of Sports for Nature (S4N) - a joint initiative of IUCN, the IOC, the United Nations Environment Programme , the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity , and Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy. S4N aims to deliver transformative action for the environment, by enabling sports to champion nature and contribute to its protection and restoration. It provides a game plan for sporting events — at all levels — to accelerate action and inspire others to protect nature. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3WiWfrz

The organization has developed policies and guidance material to mitigate the impact of airports and air operations on local ecosystems. This includes measures to reduce wildlife strikes, manage habitats around airports, minimize the introduction of invasive alien species through air transport, and prevent the trafficking of endangered species. Additionally, ICAO works closely with other UN bodies and international organizations to align aviation's biodiversity efforts with global environmental goals, particularly in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Convention on Biological Diversity's strategic plans. #SDG17 #PartnershipsForTheGoals
