About us
The UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) is the official and trusted source of internationally-comparable indicators, methodologies and standards for the Sustainable Development Goal on education (SDG 4) and key targets related to science (SDG 9), culture (SDG 11) and communication. We work directly with national statistical offices, line ministries and international organizations around the world to collect data while developing a wide array of methodologies and standards to produce the internationally-comparable indicators needed to track progress, especially in the field of education, at the global, regional and national levels. As a custodian agency for SDG indicators, UIS global databases are publicly available. We produce the indicators to fuel the policies and investments needed to transform lives and propel the world towards its development goals.

Youth is the strength of societies. 💪 Ten years ago, the UN established World Youth Skills Day to highlight the importance of equipping young people with essential skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship. As we celebrate its 10th anniversary, we reflect on progress and the need to adapt to changing educational and labor markets. Today's youth face challenges such as violent conflicts, unsafe educational environments, online hate speech, and unequal economic opportunities. Addressing these issues is crucial for equipping youth to participate effectively in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. Today we mark #YouthSkillsDay. Let us commit to empowering young people for a peaceful, just, and inclusive future: https://lnkd.in/eHiKUUiD

Last week, the Education Data and Statistics Commission (EDSC), co-chaired by Silvia Montoya, Director of the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), and Manos Antoninis, Director of the GEM Report UNESCO, convened to discuss updates on SDG 4 indicators, including coverage, guiding principles, and key reporting criteria. The dialogue set the stage for preparing the 2024-2026 work plan to advance recommendations from the Conference on Education Data and Statistics. The Education Data and Statistics Commission (EDSC), formerly the TCG, provides a platform to discuss and develop the indicators used for monitoring the Education 2030 targets in an open, inclusive and transparent manner, involving the main stakeholders. 📚 The latest UIS Data release has shown that measuring and reporting SDG 4.1.1a, the proportion of children in grades 2/3 achieving at least a minimum proficiency level in reading and mathematics, faces significant challenges, with few countries measuring and reporting on this indicator. The UNESCO Institute for Statistics has been developing frameworks and guidelines for #SDG indicator 4.1.1a since 2016, defining the MPL in 2018 and introducing the Global Proficiency Framework (GPF). Learn more about the challenges, steps taken by the UIS, current status, and next steps for SDG indicator 4.1.1a in the #WorldEducationBlog ➡️ http://bit.ly/3W3kIlN

Despite various efforts, 128 million boys and 122 million girls are still out of school, and 57% of the world’s children lack basic skills. If we continue on our current path, trillions of US dollars will be lost to economies worldwide by 2030. This emphasizes the urgent need to invest in education and skill development. Did you know that in #Africa, there is no data on the learning levels of two-thirds of children? Due to resource and capacity constraints, many countries struggle to assess learning in a way that meets global reporting standards. It’s time to turn the spotlight on children's learning! The Assessment for Minimum Proficiency Levels (AMPL) tool, developed by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, helps countries monitor and report educational progress more effectively. For the first time in 2021, Zambia reported learning levels using AMPL, which are presented in Zambia Spotlight report by #GEMReport, Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) and #Zambia’s Ministry of Education. Now, it is active in 8 sub-Saharan countries, helping them ensure that every child’s learning is reported. ➡️ Discover how AMPL is revolutionizing education reporting in Africa: https://bit.ly/3XI1aVr #UIS_UNESCO #BornToLearn #FoundationalLearning
