This past June, I travelled to Yellowknife to meet with government officials, service providers, and researchers from the Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning to unpack the Territory's wildfire response and evacuation planning. This hands-on experience was offered by the School of Cities, University of Toronto, led by professors from the Urban Studies faculty, with participation from ten graduate students across diverse disciplines, including forestry, landscape architecture, public health, and anthropology. Through this experience, I learned about the often-overlooked intersection of climate change, housing, and wildfire risk in Canada's North. Highlighting these under-researched challenges was incredibly rewarding. I'm so grateful to the individuals we had the privilege of meeting, including the Salvation Army Director, Mayor Rebecca Alty, and local service providers supporting youth and women. Our team concluded this research experience by offering policy recommendations aimed at improving evacuation strategies and addressing vulnerabilities, particularly for the Dene nation and people experiencing homelessness. Here's a link to a more in-depth look at what we did in Yellowknife! https://lnkd.in/eFhEa2fC
