October is #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth. Dr. Linda Chelico (PhD) is examining how mutations happen in cancer cells, including breast cancer. Her work involves examining a specific group of proteins that intentionally creates changes in DNA that can either help or hurt us. Learn more about her work in her #TEDxUniversityofSaskatchewan talk. #USaskBMI USask Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology, & Immunology (BMI)
October is #breastcancerawarenessmonth. Join #UsaskBMI as we celebrate the research being done by our faculty that will lead to better treatments for breast cancer. Dr. Linda Chelico's lab studies APOBEC3 enzymes. These enzymes are intrinsic immune proteins that suppress virus replication by introducing specific types of mutations into viral genomes. However, their mutation signature is also found in cancer genomes, especially breast cancer genomes. The Chelico lab is doing research to understand if these mutations found in cancer genomes are beneficial, detrimental or neutral for the cancer. Listen to Dr. Chelico's TEDX talk to find out about the Chelico lab results on this topic, along with a story of Dr. Chelico's progression through her research career. ⤵ #Usask #BMI #Biochemistry #Microbiology #Immunology #StudentLife #ResearchOpportunities
