  • We are thrilled to share the launch of the Indigenous Language Revitalization Awards this fall, supporting students from nine local First Nations: Songhees, Esquimalt, Tsartlip, Pauquachin, Tseycum, Tsawout, Sci’anew, T’Sou-ke, and Malahat. This September, the University of Victoria proudly welcomed the first cohort of Indigenous students to receive financial assistance as they begin or continue their journey in specific Indigenous language programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • When we hear stories of successful individuals with multiple interests or careers, we may often wonder about their journey and what it involved. For instructor Amber McMillan, her body of knowledge spans over 30 years and has led to where she is today—an innovator and earnest leader specializing in project, change and people management. "I really believe all of us are project managers on some level," says Amber. "My advice for anyone is to do enough due diligence to understand what project management is, because you are already a part of it."

This Orange Shirt Day, we are proud to wear the designs of Kwakwaka’wakw/Coast Salish artist Carey Newman OBC MSM, Hayalthkin’geme, UVic’s Impact Chair in Indigenous Art Practices. His powerful designs including "Hearts and Hands" (pictured on the left), honours the children who never returned home from residential schools. 💬 "This design was made to honour the children who died in residential school. The hearts express love for all those in unmarked graves and compassion for the families and communities who waited for them to be found. The small and colourful hands remind us of the uniqueness and beauty of every child. Taken together, they represent our commitment to listen to our hearts and use our hands, to do the work that needs to be done.” — Carey Newman All proceeds from T-shirt sales go directly to the Elders Engagement Fund, the Witness Blanket Project and the Orange Shirt Day Society. ➡️ If you would like to purchase an Orange Shirt, visit the UVic Bookstore in-store or online: https://ow.ly/s0XS50TqrRq
