Fellow nonprofits will understand the frustration of trying to advertise an event or service with a budget that is lower than minimal. When you are told that you have a plastic T-Rex and a Go Fish card and that's all that is available, it can be a real challenge to get the information out. That's why a recent funding offer from the RTOERO Foundation to revamp our brochures is worthy of celebration and thanks. What is RTOERO? It's Retired Teachers of Ontario/ Les Enseignantes et enseignants retraites de l'Ontario, a foundation made up of retired education workers. For those who don't go back to the occasional teachers' roles after retirement, many find themselves looking for something worthwhile on which to spend all that free time. RTOERO helps keep members healthy and active, and recognized that our current brochure could use a bit of an overhaul. We understand that sometimes when you're thinking of going to a party, your first question is "who is going to be there?" That's fair. Selwyn, we're breaking out the guest list. Chances are, if you know the name Rob Steinman well, you were probably a drama kid at Crestwood Secondary School or the parent of a drama kid. But there's more to Rob Steinman than just his academic stage presence. A recent recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International, we know Rob as the driving force behind Friends of Jackson Park and Market Hall Performance Centre. His love of volunteering started young and has no intention of stopping. Retirement. A major change in life, whether we want to acknowledge it or not. And for those who are on the Freedom 55-65 plan (some of us are on the Freedom 85 plan), the new abundance of time and lack of schedule/routine can be a big adjustment, leaving a person feeling that they've been stripped of their purpose. While some can go back to work or find some other retiree-friendly job, one of the big ways to reclaim that sense of purpose is through, you guessed it, volunteering. Our pals at CharityVillage have written this piece about the truth about purpose and volunteering. Sure, everyone says they'll miss their coworkers (really? Even Pam? While you make out your schedule for October, please remember our two volunteer fairs coming up in Selwyn and Cavan Monaghan! Lead sponsor Ontario Power Generation gave us a generous grant to expand volunteerism in Peterborough County, giving rural denizens a chance to see what opportunities exist closer to home for them. We also have the wonderful Karen Miller of CENTURY 21® realty helping to fund the fair in Cavan Monaghan Township. Volunteerism in rural areas can be difficult as transportation, distance, and hours can limit a person's ability to pitch in, never mind weather and road conditions. But for the greater part, we know that there is a strong "pitch in and help your neighbour" ethic that comes with country living. From the communal spirit of the Anishnaabe, the work of the early settlers (the community build Hutchison House at night!) to the Cavan Blazers bringing in the harvest for a wounded neighbour, and ending in Paul driving Mavis for her groceries, people help where it's needed. As we have a number of new folks with us right now, it's a good time to give you a rundown of just who we are, and why we do what we do. The obvious statement is Volunteer Peterborough does volunteer-related stuff. But that's very much an overgeneralization. We got our start way back in 2023 when, coming out of the pandemic, many volunteer organizations were having a terrible time building up their numbers again. There were people ready to volunteer again, but not sure where to go. That's where we come in. Volunteer Peterborough is like a dating service but instead of hooking you up with a potential mate (STOP ASKING, JEFFERY200354!), we introduce you to potential volunteering opportunities. If you are an agency that needs volunteers, we have them. Lots. Volunteers can sign up for free and look through the many posts, or have matches according to their preferences emailed to them. It makes finding a place to share one's talents faster and easier. What does the agency get? People who have already stated that they want to help. Our sign-up for volunteers asks them to state their skills and preferred causes. This means that the people who are seeing your opportunity posting are already interested and ready to pitch in. No going through twenty names on a sign up sheet to find only one person willing to help. It saves everyone time and frustration. The agencies that sign on with us have stated that we make recruitment easier. The volunteers that sign on with us have stated that it's easy to find a volunteer position that they love.
