This week, we publicly announced our scientific framework for measuring simulation realism—a critical safety requirement for any AV player before driverless deployment on public roads. Waabi World has demonstrated a 99.7% realism score. Watch as the Waabi Driver executes similar maneuvers in both the real world and simulation. These visuals show the actual autonomy system’s outputs and driving plans in the real world (left) compared to the simulated environment (right). Canadian robotruck startup Waabi says its super-realistic virtual simulation is now accurate enough to prove the safety of its driverless big rigs without having to run them for miles on real roads. The company uses a digital twin of its real-world robotrucks, loaded up with real sensor data, and measures how the twin's performance compares to that of real trucks on real roads. Waabi says they now match almost eactly. The company claims its approach is a better way to demonstrate safety than just racking up real-world miles, as many of its competitors do. Today we are unveiling a new and definitive standard for AV safety: simulator realism. MIT Technology Review spotlights why simulator realism is the critical safety standard the AV industry must embrace now. Life-threatening accidents happen roughly once every 10 million miles driven by humans. Even with thousands of trucks driving constantly, we'd need years to encounter just one such event. Additionally, recreating dangerous scenarios for testing is ethically problematic and practically impossible. While the industry has embraced simulation, it has neglected the crucial step of rigorously measuring simulation realism. To unlock AVs at scale, we must establish clear realism metrics ensuring safety and accountability. Waabi World's exceptional 99.7% realism score, validated through our scientific measurement framework, represents a breakthrough for AV safety. This establishes a new industry benchmark - all AV developers must now publicly demonstrate their simulators' quantified realism before driverless deployment. https://lnkd.in/dejrQvba

Thank you to everyone who joined AVIA for our Senate staff briefing on #autonomousvehicle policy! We had an engaging discussion on the critical need for a federal AV framework to ensure safety, innovation, and U.S. leadership in this transformative industry. Looking forward to continuing the conversation and advancing smart, bipartisan AV policies! Special thank you to Waymo’s David Quinalty, Waabi’s Sam Loesche, and Torc Robotics’ Anne Marie Lewis for sitting on the panel.
