Watt Consulting Group Ltd. (WATT) had the pleasure of working with the Village of Cumberland over the last 18 months with developing the Village’s Transportation Master Plan. Led by WATT’s Victoria office (Andy Kading, P.Eng., P.E., Timothy Shah, Mallory Lowes, Caytlin Kopeck, and Adrian Myszka), the Transportation Master Plan (TMP) is a forward-thinking and practical blueprint designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and connectivity within the Village’s transportation network. Among its key recommendations is the establishment of a network of ‘shared streets’, aimed at making Cumberland’s local and residential roads more comfortable and safer for children and other vulnerable road users. WATT extends its gratitude to Village staff members Rob Crisfield, Joel Clarkston, Karin Albert, and Courtney Simpson for their unwavering collaboration throughout the process. Additionally, we thank the broader Cumberland community for their active participation and valuable contributions, which have been instrumental in shaping the future of transportation in the village! WATT Consulting Group is honored to be a recipient of a Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC) Silver Award for Excellence in Policy Planning for the Town of Ladysmith Official Community Plan. Timothy Shah, our co-lead of the Victoria office, led the specific transportation planning and policy work as part of this project, which included an extensive public engagement process. This included a series of walkshops and bikeshops with the community to understand the barriers they face when walking, rolling, and cycling around town and what they want to see to make Ladysmith’s transportation network more inclusive and accessible. The OCP also includes 50 specific transportation policies ranging from promoting active transportation and transit use, enhancing accessibility within the pedestrian network, better managing public parking, and accelerating the adoption of electric mobility. It was an incredible team effort and special shoutout to The Town of Ladysmith and Jennifer Fix for leading the way and SSG (Sustainability Solutions Group) for their innovative climate modelling and climate policy work. The OCP was completed over a two year period and is available online at: https://lnkd.in/dZ_c669N More information about WATT’s role is here: https://lnkd.in/gEzkkquN And more information about the project is here: https://lnkd.in/ekeCe4c2 #WEAREWATT #ClimateAction #TransportationPlanning

Public transit launches today on Vancouver Island's West Coast! 🚌 Our team at WATT has been spearheading a monumental effort between three local governments, two First Nations, one provincial agency, one federal agency, and several community groups for the past year to plan and deliver public transit to connect Tofino, Ucluelet, hitac̓u, Ty-Histanis, and Esowista. I'm on the ground today overseeing the launch. It's been great hearing stories from riders this morning about the benefits the service is going to bring to the community. A win for access to basic needs and livelihoods, climate, health, economic development, tourism, Indigenous reconciliation, and more here in the West Coast.
Congratulations to the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) and its member communities on the successful launch of the West Coast Transit service on the traditional territory of the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples on Vancouver Island’s West Coast. The WATT team has been working with the ACRD for the past year to plan and launch this interim public transit service connecting the communities of Tofino, Ucluelet, and the First Nations communities of hitac̓u, Ty-Histanis, and Esowista. This service will provide a crucial connection for residents in the region to access employment, services, shopping, and recreational opportunities, along with supporting regional tourism. Shout-out to all the community groups and people behind the scenes who helped make public transit on the West Coast a reality. Our transportation planners, Mallory Lowes and Victor Ngo, are up bright and early today to ensure service launch goes smoothly. WATT’s transportation practice develops and delivers practical solutions for all communities with a focus on improving mobility options in small to mid-sized communities. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to support the development of the West Coast Transit service from concept to implementation.
