Today, September 30, we pause to reflect on the truth of Canada’s past and the path toward reconciliation. We remember that this land our hospital sits on is shared by nations such as the Mississaugas, Wendat, and Anishinaabe, as has been for thousands of years. Today, Women's College Hospital is proud to continue fostering reconciliation through healthcare initiatives like the Ganawishkadawe Centre for Wise Practices, improving healthcare for Indigenous communities and honoring the wisdom of their ancestors. This Truth and Reconciliation Day, we encourage everyone to learn, reflect, and commit to supporting Indigenous rights and justice. #TruthAndReconciliationDay #EveryChildMatters #OrangeShirtDay #WeAreWomens

Oral traditions reveal the area where Women's College Hospital now sits was once a vibrant meeting place for trade, culture, and wisdom, with archaeological evidence dating back to 1000 BC. The land was governed by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum—a treaty between nations to share and protect resource-rich areas. It also featured the Carrying Place, a portage route connecting Lake Simcoe and Lake Ontario, vital for trade and transport. In 1787, the British negotiated Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas, marking a significant shift as colonial forces redefined and controlled the land. Despite these changes, Indigenous influence remained strong. Beginning in 1926 the lands were sold to WCH for a new hospital building and we have resided here ever since. WCH honors these roots, and established the Ganawishkadawe Centre for Wise Practices in 2020, advancing Indigenous health research and care. #IndigenousHistory #HealthcareEquity #WeAreWomens
