It wouldn't be a Benefits page, if we didn't discuss Wegovy! -it's expensive & when claims rise, so does your premium... but does it have to? For plan sponsors and insurers, the introduction of Wegovy presents an opportunity to support individuals living with obesity by including this medication in their health plans, considering its potential to improve health outcomes and reduce the risk of chronic illnesses associated with obesity. Wegovy, a weight-loss medication by Novo Nordisk, is now available in Canada after being approved by Health Canada in 2021. It’s designed for individuals diagnosed with obesity or those significantly overweight with related medical conditions like high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, or obstructive sleep apnea. Wegovy contains semaglutide, similar to the diabetes drug Ozempic, but at a higher dose. It’s part of a class of medicines known as GLP-1 analogues, which help control blood sugar and promote weight loss by making people feel full. The drug is administered through weekly injections, starting at 0.25 milligrams and increasing to a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg. The rollout of Wegovy is significant for those battling obesity and diabetes, offering a new tool for treatment. It’s meant to be used alongside physical activity and nutrition, and it’s not intended for cosmetic weight loss. The availability of Wegovy in Canada is expected to have a substantial health impact, especially given the country’s rising obesity rates. This means - it's going to hit employer sponsored plans.
