It’s about raising awareness, breaking stigma, and understanding the challenges and strengths of our community. A new Angus Reid survey found that 1 in 5 people with cancer struggle to pay their bills, and more than a third are forced to dip into their retirement savings. The Canadian Cancer Society estimates the average cancer patient faces $33,000 in out-of-pocket expenses during treatment. When Harjeet Kaur and her husband immigrated to Canada, they never imagined the unexpected turn their path would take. Just a year after settling in Edmonton, Harjeet was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. But through profound challenges, she found the strength to heal and created a mission to break the silence around cancer in her South Asian community. “In my culture, there are a lot of myths about cancer and I want to do something about that. I want to break the stigma and have open conversations. Cancer is not your fault and it doesn’t have to be a death sentence. It’s a disease; a medical condition which needs to be addressed. We need to be able to see it for what it is and talk about it,” said Harjeet. Cancer conversations can be difficult, and cultural values often shape how people navigate them. In some communities, deeply rooted beliefs around family and privacy can make it harder to talk about cancer or seek support—sometimes leading to delays in care. Wellspring Alberta’s new South Asian Outreach Project is working to change that. With dedicated funding, community partnerships, and the appointment of a new South Asian outreach coordinator to lead this initiative, we’re creating culturally informed support programs designed to meet the unique needs of members of South Asian communities in Calgary. We’re inviting those affected by cancer, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community members to share their insights and help shape this initiative.
