About us
The WRLA is currently the sixth largest law association in Ontario with over 620 members. Our association was originally founded in Berlin in 1894 by a group of nine lawyers as a professional association aimed at providing access to a law library to its members. Today, our not-for-profit association continues to provide valuable library and research services, and has also grown to become a leading organization committed to offering its members advocacy, legal education, mentorship and guidance through the ongoing challenges facing the profession. The WRLA is governed by a volunteer board of lawyers and paralegals from all practice areas and represents all sizes of local law firms. The WRLA operates in the Waterloo Region Courthouse Library and has one of the largest private law library collections in Ontario. While involved in innumerable community activities, the WRLA represents our members to the Ontario bench and bar, to all levels of government and to the public at large promoting our three pillars: KNOWLEDGE, ADVOCACY, and COMMUNITY.

September 30th is the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. It is a day to reflect on the tragic and ongoing impact of the residential school system on Indigenous Peoples. The courthouse and WRLA library will be closed on Monday in honour of this day. Commit to educating yourself. The WRLA library has resources for you to learn about the interaction between Indigenous rights and legal traditions, Canadian legislation, and case law. Reach out to library staff to borrow these titles.

Last night, the Opening of the Courts marked the traditional start of the new year in the legal community and courthouse. The judiciary, licensees and students met to socialize and hear about what is new in the jurisdiction of Waterloo Region. The WRLA also honoured five of its members with the title Legend of the Profession for 50 years or more practicing law. Congratulations to Wayne Farhood, Adolf Gubler, Myron Matlow, David Thrasher, and Richard Van Buskirk for reaching this remarkable milestone.
