In the mid-1980s five coworkers suggested an idea for a new product that was ultimately rejected by the company they worked for. Fueled with determination and armed with innovation, this group founded ZTR Control Systems in London in 1987. Today, our global high-tech company continues to develop new and innovative solutions for off-road industrial equipment markets, specifically in Locomotive Modernization and Industrial Internet of Things (IoT). The Railway division is recognized as Locomotive Modernization Experts, providing solutions to improve the performance and reliability of aging locomotives. Innovation is where we began and it’s the thread that joins us today. Every employee is encouraged to think creatively and this approach is what provides ZTR with a competitive advantage. At ZTR, we do a lot of things really well. That starts with listening. We listen to customers and create solutions and products that fill a need in the many industries we serve. The first of six cutting-edge hybrid battery-electric locomotives designed and built by Union Pacific Railroad and its partner ZTR, a leading rail technology company, are currently being tested in a Union Pacific facility and rail yard. “This is an incredibly exciting pilot project with great potential to improve the fuel efficiency of our locomotive fleet,” said Beth Whited, President of Union Pacific Railroad. “It underscores our strong commitment to exploring and developing alternative energy sources while reducing our carbon footprint and advancing our sustainability goals.” Union Pacific worked closely with ZTR on the project: ZTR designed the hybrid propulsion technology, while Union Pacific built the prototype at its North Little Rock, Arkansas, facility.
