Alberta Home Construction continues hot pace in May Housing starts in Alberta stood at 48,185 units* in May, up 32% from the same month last year. Despite some month-to-month volatility, starts have been trending up and have hit at least 40,000 units (annualized) each month since August. The last time Alberta had a run like this was during the 2007 housing boom. Regionally, Edmonton (+69% YTD) has been leading the charge since the end of last year while starts have risen 35% in Calgary. Alberta’s new housing market remains the hottest in the country, responsible for about two-thirds of the YTD national increase. If you took Alberta out of the mix, national starts were up a modest 4.1%. Great for any business that is involved with the home, insurance, legal services, furniture, renovations and maintenance; affects almost every sector of the retail market.

Infrastructure BC
Infrastructure BC publishes the Spring 2024 edition of the BC Major Infrastructure Projects Brochure Infrastructure BC is pleased to present the Spring 2024 BC Major Infrastructure Projects Brochure. This brochure showcases the public projects planned or underway in B.C., with a value of more than $50 million each. These projects range from early planning to pre-procurement and active procurement stages. “Infrastructure BC’s publishing of the Spring 2024 Major Projects Brochure today comes during an important month for our province, Construction and Skilled Trades Month,” says Mark Liedemann, Infrastructure BC President and CEO. “This year’s theme, “Working Together to Build B.C.,” honours those whose expertise and experience have helped build the province. As part of our role in supporting the province and the industry in dealing with market dynamic challenges, Infrastructure BC will continue to examine and implement innovative procurement models, such as Progressive Design-Build, Alliance, and Target Price Contracts,” adds Liedemann. “At a time when B.C.’s construction needs are great, the ability to access high-quality, transparent project information is key to helping general and trade contractors plan and understand the direction of the market both locally and across the province,” says Chris Atchison, President of the British Columbia Construction Association (BCCA). “During this, the 7th annual Construction Month, we celebrate our industry’s rich legacy and vital contribution to B.C.’s economy. Together, we’ll work to build the infrastructure needed to support housing and our communities.” Infrastructure BC supports government and project owners in choosing the most suitable delivery model to build complex projects such as highways, bridges, schools, and hospitals. By publishing this brochure each spring and fall, Infrastructure BC aims to inform and engage the industry, contractors, subcontractors, and market participants about the upcoming opportunities. ### Advantages of Deconstruction Over Demolition in Vancouver In Vancouver, deconstruction offers significant advantages over conventional demolition, especially when partnered with a company like **VEMA Deconstruction**, which includes sustainable demolition as a core service. One of the primary benefits of deconstruction is the **salvaging and reuse** of valuable materials from a project. By carefully dismantling buildings, VEMA ensures that materials such as wood, fixtures, and metals are reclaimed rather than sent to landfills. These materials are then **donated on behalf of the property owner**, offering them a **tax credit** that can be applied to their annual tax return, making it a financially attractive option. Additionally, deconstruction is a **greener alternative** to traditional demolition, aligning with Vancouver's sustainability goals. The careful removal of materials ensures that waste is minimized, reducing the environmental impact of a project. Homeowners and builders can take pride in knowing they are contributing to the circular economy, reducing their carbon footprint, and supporting local reuse markets. With **VEMA Deconstruction**, homeowners and builders benefit from a streamlined process that offers the same efficiency as a conventional demolition. VEMA includes services such as **reclaiming, abatement, strip-out, deconstruction, concrete removal, and excavation**, all within the same timeframe as a traditional demo. This makes it the go-to choice for those seeking an environmentally responsible solution without sacrificing time or project timelines. In summary, choosing deconstruction over demolition in Vancouver not only helps the environment but also provides property owners with financial incentives, all while maintaining the speed and efficiency of conventional methods. VEMA Deconstruction leads the way in sustainable practices, ensuring your project is both eco-friendly and cost-effective.

We all know cost of construction in Canada is too high, especially in the multi-unit residential sector where thousands of new affordable units are desperately needed. It’s encouraging to see that there is movement towards allowing single egresses in lower rise buildings, but as this article points out, elevators are also a prime culprit. It’s time to give the elevator industry some critical scrutiny.

Increasing Awareness for Women in BC Construction: Progress and Challenges. Awareness about the need for more women in BC’s construction industry is rising, yet significant challenges remain. Jas Sangha, CFO of Crown Building Supplies, highlighted the difficulty of inclusion and mentorship in a male-dominated field. Leaders like Seema Lal of Canadian Construction Women emphasize addressing inherent biases. While women's employment in construction has grown, a gender pay gap of 18% persists. Indigenous and immigrant women face even greater disparities. Highlighting and supporting underrepresented groups is crucial for a more inclusive industry. To truly break the glass ceiling, it's essential to continue fostering an environment that values diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that all voices are heard and represented. Together, we can build a stronger, more equitable future for everyone in construction. We have a few spots left in our Victoria and Nanaimo sessions, join us to hear more about what is required to construct a certified NetZero and wildfire resistant house. Federal programs are requiring homeowners to work with qualified NetZero builders to construct NetZero and fire resilient homes to qualify for grants and protect homeowners from climate related events such as wildfires. This educational event will focus on construction-based solutions for building wildfire resistant homes in B.C.. Experts from RDH Building Sciences, Natural Resources Canada, and others in the field will discuss how to incorporate non-combustible building materials, envelope details, fire-rated wall assemblies, and exterior fire prevention measures into Part 9 housing construction. There will be 3 technical based presentation: 1) envelope details and materials. Namely, points of entry in the home where embers can penetrate the structure, and the substitution of combustible building materials for non-combustible ones. 2) constructing a 1hr fire-rated wall assembly. Looking at the different solutions and materials that can be incorporated into a wall assembly to achieve a 1-hr fire-rating. 3) Measures that can be taken outside of the house to improve wildfire resistance. A series of infographics and guides, created by NRCan, will be highlighted throughout the event. Participants will receive access to these resources to support the implementation of wildfire resistant construction measures.

Deferring the rehabilitation of water and wastewater infrastructure is a mistake many municipalities make. While deferring maintenance might lead to short-term budget relief, it impacts the lives of Ontarians daily. Ontarians need safe drinking water and proper sewer treatments.
