Rethinking the Role of a Systems Integrator for Artificial Intelligence - War on the Rocks "From geospatial intelligence to decision support, there are millions of datapoints flowing through AI systems every day in the Defense Department. Creating “markets” for these datapoints to be matched with models fosters a newfound level of competition that benefits the Defense Department and warfighters." Calian Group is currently leading a project supporting development of intelligent systems for the Department of National Defence/Ministère de la défense nationale and Canadian Armed Forces | Forces armées canadiennes (DND/CAF). The Calian team is working with a range of emerging technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), multimodal displays, attention-aware displays (sustained attention), clutter and situation awareness, trust in automation, human automation interaction with unmanned systems, man-unmanned teaming, intelligent adaptive interfaces, augmented cognition, adaptive learning and intelligent tutoring. The research will help the CAF in its design, implementation, acquisition, and operation of military systems such as AI, robotics and autonomous systems. Facing the invisible enemy: How Nato troops deal with deadly nerve agents - @forcesnews.com (Video) "BFBS Forces News travelled to the Canadian province of Alberta, 20 years since the first Exercise Precise Response was held there. It's an annual training exercise using live agents to find out how troops prepare to defend against an invisible enemy. Western Alberta is home to all things CBRN in Canada. The training area on the prairie is huge. At 2,800 sq km, it is larger than Luxembourg, and flat as far as the eye can see. It is one of the few places in the world where troops can practise using live chemical, biological and radiological agents." With roots in Canada, Calian Group supplies NATO Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) with chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN)-specific training for all Alliance military operations. CBRN knowledge and operational proficiency are important for preparing defensive measures for NATO to address the potential use of chemical, biological or nuclear/radiological weapons against friendly forces or civilian populations. US Army activates Arctic Aviation Command for extreme cold flying - Task & Purpose "Army helicopter crews assigned to fly and operate in arctic conditions will now answer to leadership based with them in Alaska rather than commanders in Hawaii or near Seattle. They’ll now report instead to the newly activated Arctic Aviation Command at Fort Wainwright, just outside of Fairbanks, Alaska.....It also means new equipment and ideas for cold-weather flyers. The Alaska units already have upgraded the heaters inside some helicopters and have installed windscreens for door gunners to avoid the sub-zero windchill." The US needs more pop-up air bases worldwide to keep enemies guessing - Defense News "The U.S. Air Force completed the eight-day Bamboo Eagle 24-3 exercise on Aug. 10, bringing over 3,000 service members and more than 150 aircraft together to operate in the Western United States and Eastern Pacific. The large-scale exercise paired important Agile Combat Employment (ACE) training with a Red Flag exercise designed to hone cutting-edge tactics for air warfare. This exercise, and future efforts like it, are critical to strengthening the U.S. Air Force’s (USAF) ability to operate in contested environments at all echelons...." Western militaries need to achieve and maintain air superiority to successfully conduct joint operations. Doctrine clearly states: “Control of the air is a prerequisite to success for modern operations or campaigns...control of the air cannot be assumed.” Realistic, configurable, high-fidelity training - both in the field and in synthetic training environments - is vital for militaries to evolve and iterate training to keep pace with threats in an ever-changing multi-domain environment. EOD teams upend training and focus from IEDs on the ground to drones in the air - Task & Purpose "Over the last two decades, Army ordnance disposal technicians were tasked with rendering more than 100,000 improvised explosive devices “safe” in Iraq and Afghanistan. But as the face of warfare changes, the threat of one-way attack unmanned aerial systems and drones strapped with munitions and explosives are becoming a topic that ordnance disposal technicians are being increasingly trained on." Contemporary warfare includes small, commercially-sourced drones, supporting near-real time targeting and serving as de facto precision fires platforms at the tactical level. This is a major battlefield innovation, and will likely continue. US Space Force explores 'small GEO' options for resilient communications - SpaceNews "Generally weighing between 300 and 500 kilograms, these satellites promise geostationary capabilities at reduced costs and faster development cycles than traditional multi-ton geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) satellites.
