Undergraduates enhance their academics and major area of study with skills developed through integrated programs such as co-op employment, study abroad, field work, and career-focused minors. Graduate students work at the cutting edge of their disciplines while also learning professional and applied skills to ensure their expertise can serve both inside and outside academia. Tackling some of the most critical issues of our time, Arts professors make meaningful and tangible contributions to public policy, mental health, business accountability, civil liberties, cultural expression, and creative communication - to name just a few areas of impact.

“I’ve grown so much throughout the PhD program both personally and professionally, and I’ve worked so hard. Being chosen as valedictorian is the ultimate recognition of all I’ve done, and it is such an honour.” Congratulations to PhD graduate and valedictorian Jillian Adams, PhD, CPA! 🎉 One of her proudest achievements was receiving the Warren Ober Award for Outstanding Teaching by a Graduate Student in 2023, an acknowledgment to her dedication to teaching. She also received the Ontario Graduate Scholarship and the RBC Graduate Scholarship in Sustainability Research.
Convocation is a time to reflect on hard work, dedication, and innovation, and this year we are especially proud to celebrate five exceptional graduate students as they take the stage as valedictorians. Congratulations to Anne Fleming (BA '88), an Honours English graduate from the University of Waterloo, whose novel "Curiosities" was shortlisted for The Giller Prize! 🎉 Published in April by Penguin Random House Canada, the book begins when amateur historian Anne discovers memoirs from 17th century England. As she pieces together a story of plague, superstition, and queer love, she must frame the events with her own contemporary understanding of truth and queer identity. A groundbreaking new study by University of Waterloo researchers found that international students who study in Canada don’t see their skills underutilized once they join the Canadian labour market, a sign that signals the potential of the country’s International Student Strategy to help boost economic growth. The study’s findings provide a clearer view of how successful international students are once they complete their studies across Canadian post-secondary schools, notably in technology- and engineering-focused programs where they enjoy an earnings advantage over their peers. Here are some key findings from the study: ▪ 70% of Waterloo’s international graduates stay in Canada and become permanent residents. ▪ Waterloo's international graduates earn up to 37% more annually than Canadian-born counterparts. ▪ The study recommends updating Canada's International Student Strategy to align immigration with labour market needs.
