By reducing/eliminating fugitive emissions from valves and pipe connections, both health and safety risks are decreased on-site, along with the environmental impact of the process leak on our climate. Ensuring low or no fugitive emissions eliminates the "wasting" of everything that went into creating the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that leaked - from the valuable flow media to the energy added within the process. Across the globe, oil and gas production companies are investing in new processes and technologies to minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and advance decarbonization efforts in their production wells, tank farms, refineries, chemical plants, and pipeline operations. One area being transformed by these new control and monitoring systems is the industry-wide effort to minimize fugitive GHG emissions. Technology to address fugitive emissions include smart, rugged solenoid-operated and electric valve systems for upstream oil and gas extraction designed to significantly reduce emissions at the well head and storage and separator systems. There are also reliable monitoring technologies that can help ensure thief hatches are locked on tank storage systems. Emerson's Global Director of Marketing - Discrete Automation, Anne-Sophie Chambareau, discusses some of these technologies and new regulatory requirements.
