From automating industrial tasks to assisting in healthcare and customer service, their potential is expanding every day. But what will they be doing in the future? Here are some of the most exciting possibilities: 🌍 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 As automation continues to rise, humanoid robots could step in to perform labor-intensive or dangerous tasks, especially in industries like mining, construction, and disaster recovery. Equipped with Xsens precise motion data, these robots will be able to replicate human movements with unparalleled accuracy, taking over tasks that are too risky for humans. 🏥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 Imagine robots in hospitals assisting doctors during surgeries or taking care of the elderly, providing round-the-clock support. Humanoid robots, trained with data captured by Xsens, can handle delicate tasks with precision, such as lifting patients, administering medications, or even providing companionship. 🏗️ 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 Robots could soon help build skyscrapers or perform complex maintenance work in hazardous conditions. • 👨⚕️ Every day, surgeons use their expertise to improve and save lives, but the physical demands of their work can take a toll. Long hours in demanding positions often lead to muscle strain, fatigue, and even long-term musculoskeletal disorders. Philip Louie's research marks a critical first step in addressing these physical challenges. By focusing on surgeon well-being, his work is paving the way for more ergonomic operating environments and better practices in the future. Stay tuned for our upcoming customer case with Philip, where we’ll explore his research in depth!

**We Don’t Want to Become Our Own Patients!** It is an honor to operate on my colleagues. But it also highlights a disturbing trend … why are we becoming our own patients?! I’ve discussed my Passion 4 E’s in MIS Spine surgery in multiple occasions: Ergonomics, Education, Enabling Technology, and Economics! The ERGONOMICS area remains a fascinating one that is in dire need of more attention. Imagine spending hours hunched over, leaning over patients of various sizes; your neck flexed/tilted, your back aching, and your upper extremities fatigued (and tingling!). Now imagine that this is your daily reality, where the stakes aren't just your discomfort, but the safety of your patients. For us surgeons, this isn't hypothetical—it's an all-too-common occupational reality. We are increasingly facing a crisis of our own: musculoskeletal injuries caused by poor ergonomics in the operating room. While the focus is often on patient safety (and should be!), the surgeon’s own physical well-being has taken a back seat, creating a growing need to address the long-term impacts of poor posture, awkward positioning, and prolonged surgeries on our health. If we don’t shift attention to this growing problem, we risk cutting our careers short and losing the very people we depend on to treat the conditions we ourselves are facing! (by the way, I have seen David Skaggs and Theresa Williamson give great talks on this topic as well) I have teamed up with Movella and scalefit to investigate the positions that we place our bodies in during surgery and at which portions of the case, we place various regions at risk for musculoskeletal injury. Lightweight wearable sensors (XSENS) capture all body postures and movements while we are operating, while the associated software visualizes them using an avatar and analyzes them in real time with 20+ animated stress parameters! We are actively working on tying together subjective pain points during surgery (based on intraoperative surveys and therapist-based evaluations) and objective findings to determine portions of common spine surgeries that are the biggest culprits to acute and chronic MSK concerns. We also are working w/ industry partners to assess how specific interventions, enabling tech, and instrumentation impact the ergonomic conditions of our work. Aiyush Bansal, MD, MASc; Rafael Garcia de Oliveira; Patricia Lipson; Takeshi Fujii I'm sure we all have good stories about our own MSK pain =) WE DON’T WANT TO BECOME OUR OWN PATIENTS! 💡 𝐗𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐬 In humanoid robot training, precision is everything. Robots performing fine motor tasks or interacting with humans rely on highly accurate data. But why is this level of accuracy so important? Here's the breakdown:     - 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐬, 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 Even the slightest inaccuracy in motion data can have significant effects. In tasks requiring precision — like surgery assistance or assembling delicate parts — a minor error can lead to mishandling or even damage.       - 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐈 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠   Motion data is processed by AI systems to teach robots how to move. If this data is flawed, the AI will replicate and learn from these errors, causing them to multiply over time. This can result in inefficient or imprecise movements that get worse with repeated learning.       - 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥-𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 Inaccuracies in robot movements aren’t just inefficient — they can pose safety risks, especially in environments like manufacturing or healthcare, where human lives and production quality are at stake.       ❇ 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐗𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠? Xsens motion capture guarantees that robots are trained with peer-reviewed, high-quality data, ensuring that errors don't become ingrained in their movement patterns. Our advanced biomechanical model and sensor fusion algorithms deliver precise motion analysis, even in challenging, magnetically disturbed environments, enabling unparalleled accuracy in the most complex tasks.
