We must counter misinformation with facts. Then it comes to learning about #truthandreconciliation, let NVision Insight Group Inc. be your guide. Here's what you can do to counter three common distorted or downright incorrect beliefs and attitudes that people have about #indigenouspeoples in Canada today. 1️⃣ Please stop using the phrase 'Our' Indigenous Peoples. We are not owned by you, or by Canada. 2️⃣ Start remembering to add an 's' after People, because otherwise, it seems like 'Indigenous People' is one homogenous group, when in fact, there are more than 50 Nations, plus Inuit plus the Metis Nation. 3️⃣ Push back against the false narrative that it's 'taxpayer money' that pays for First Nations on reserve. Read up on the Indian Trust Fund https://lnkd.in/ey7H8kuM and shift your thinking. Got a question about #culturalawareness or #truthandreconciliation? Send us a message. How can we help shift your thinking?

#colonization has been about dehumanizing Indigenous peoples; the latest example is the jurisdictional wrangling and political posturing, apologies, then the search for remains of Indigenous women in a dump outside Winnipeg. These women were loved, they were valued in life; now they are finally being valued in death. #truthandreconciliation

If you saw my post from a few days ago, I've added Substack as a platform to create content on Indigenous issues and T&R. I've decided that the easiest way to share is to write the posts in Substack, then share them here, rather than copying and pasting the text from Substack to LinkedIn, then adding the images and links. You don't need to join Substack but if you subscribe on that platform, you will see all original articles. So, here's a new post on Boil Water Advisories. https://lnkd.in/eU8saADU

There is apparently no American distributor for this film. No need to guess why. The title of this film and its brutality should remind us that this is the reality of imperialism, of colonization. Indigenous people say the same thing: No Other Land. We have no other home. This is all we've ever known. Read Taiaiake Alfred's book It's All About The Land. It really is. What Indigenous people also say is "We are the land", like the recent title of a book about Treaty 11. This is very different than typical Wesern understandings of property rights, deeds, boundaries and fences. It's why in most Indigenous languages, the land is described as our mother, hence 'mother earth.' In Canada, we are seeing the ongoing tension over who has rights to the land and its resources. Canada says it follows the rule of law, and our courts deliver victory after victory, precedent after precedent in favour of Indigenous peoples. Around the world? Let's not forget the dehumanizing, greedy way that European countries carved up continents like pieces of pie, enforcing colonialism, raping and pillaging resources, setting up 'governments', destabilizing regions. I can't add images to this post as I'm sharing this post but just search "colonial Africa' or 'colonial South America' and you'll see. This is the history of the world. Wars fought over land with no regard to the Indigenous peoples of the lands. Just look at Ukraine today. There is a better way forward, and, as First Nations said during treaty-making, they were willing to share the land. We know how that has gone. Around the world, too. How much sharing has gone on? #nootherland
Last night, I watched No Other Land on Channel 4, and I’m still haunted by its gut-wrenching portrayal of the heartless brutality of Israeli occupation in Palestine. The film exposes the cold, calculated nature of Israeli policy in Masafer Yatta, a region where Palestinians are ripped from their homes under the guise of a “military zone” designation. This is deliberate, calculated oppression. It’s apartheid in its rawest, most unapologetic form. What struck me first was the fact that, in a media landscape where almost everything is interrupted by commercial breaks, the film aired without any adverts. Was it an editorial choice, or did advertisers refuse to associate with such a politically charged film? In any event, the absence of ads made the message hit even harder. There was no escape. The story of Palestinian suffering was laid bare for all to see, without distractions. The film follows Palestinian activist Basel Adra, who captures the horrors of forced displacement as Israeli soldiers demolish homes and push families off their land. Watching these soldiers destroy families’ lives with bulldozers, I couldn’t help but ask myself- how could anyone endure this? How would I respond if an occupying force illegally reduced my home to rubble? The resilience and unwavering hope of the Palestinians is awe-inspiring. Every day, they wake up to the possibility of losing everything, yet they continue to resist, continue to fight for their right to exist on their own land. Their strength is extraordinary, borne out of necessity, and a testament to their determination to hold onto their dignity. The brutality of the Israeli occupation is beyond comprehension. This isn’t just about destroying homes, it’s about severing a people’s connection to their land, their history, and their identity. Palestinians are not just being evicted; they’re being erased. Israeli settlers are protected, while Palestinians live under constant threat of violence and displacement. Their rights are stripped away by a Zionist government that treats them as second-class citizens in their own land. This brutality is only possible because of international complicity. The US and others continue to pour military aid and political support into Israel, ignoring the human rights abuses being carried out in plain sight. No Other Land pulls no punches. It calls out the hypocrisy of a world that claims to stand for justice and democracy while turning a blind eye to Palestinian suffering. The filmmakers’ Oscar acceptance speech was a bold call for accountability, demanding that the US stop blocking the path to peace and end its complicity in these crimes against humanity. No Other Land isn’t just a documentary; it’s a chilling account of what happens when an entire people are subjected to systematic violence, forced displacement, and the destruction of their homes. If you haven’t watched it yet, I urge you to do so.

My post exceeded the allowed length for LinkedIn so here's the link to the original substack post. What do we value as Canadians? Does it include acknowledging the past and recognizing Indigenous rights? Then we are stronger for it. #truthandreconciliation #culturalawareness #never51 https://lnkd.in/efwxeZj9

Most Canadians have heard of residential schools and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. But what about Indian Hospitals? They were set up as Tuberculosis sanitoriums for Indigenous patients (why there was such a disproportionately large numer of TB cases will need to be a post for another day), that morphed into racially segregated hospitals where staff was underpaid, overworked, patients received substandard care, and where some were subjected to abuse, malnutrition and medical experiments (just like children at residential schools…) Canada just apologized for its negligence, and announced compensation. Some are cynical and some grumble about why their “taxpayer6 money” goes to these things. But the reality is that if they had treated people with care and concern in the first place, they wouldn't have had to sue Canada to right this wrong. This is what #truthandreconciliation looks like. #culturalawareness https://lnkd.in/e3rMrTMN
