As children born during the COVID-19 pandemic turn five, research on the impacts of the crisis is showing some surprising, and reassuring, results. #UCalgaryMed researchers Dr. Catherine Lebel, PhD, and Dr. Gerald Giesbrecht, PhD, along with Dr. Lianne Tomfohr-Madsen, PhD, had launched a national study after the global pandemic was declared to investigate the effects on pregnant people and babies born during the period. While there was concern the pandemic would create a generation of kids who wouldn’t achieve their potential—as babies born during disasters are at an elevated risk of experiencing developmental delays, and having poor mental health and brain development—the most recent evidence suggests “pandemic babies” are doing better than expected. “… perhaps the most striking observation regarding the effects of the pandemic on children’s development is their remarkable resilience. 📣 Measles exposure in Calgary area Alberta Health Services issued a public alert the evening of March 14 after a case of measles was confirmed in the Airdrie, Alberta area. Measles is one of—if not the most—infectious virus doctors deal with today, says immunologist Dr. Craig Jenne, PhD (pictured below). People tend to underestimate just how severe measles can be, he adds. ADVICE: The best protection against the airborne virus is vaccination. Those born in 1970 or after who attended the locations linked below are encouraged to monitor for measles symptoms such as cough and runny nose, red eyes and fever. 👏🏼 Join us in congratulating Oyinda Obigbesan! The fourth-year #UCalgaryMed biomedical sciences student is a prestigious McCall MacBain Scholarship finalist! Oyinda was selected from nearly 700 applicants for the McGill University scholarship based on her exceptional dedication as a leader and community builder. Complementing her research in maternal and child health and other areas, Oyinda is an advocate for equal accessibility in the health-care system and for equity in STEM. She co-led a high school research program through Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), securing funding and mentorship for students and earning her an Alberta Women in STEM award.  “Leadership isn’t about being the loudest, it’s about taking action and lifting others along the way,” she says.   As a McCall MacBain Scholarship finalist, Oyinda will compete for a fully funded scholarship to cover tuition, living expenses and mentorship opportunities.
