Join us in congratulating Bevin Wiley who has received a 2024 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship! The Vanier CGS program honours exceptional doctoral students who are leading the way in their field of science and medicine. As a third-year #UCalgaryMed PhD candidate in neuroscience, Bevin is investigating the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation to treat children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). She says her journey at #UCalgary began during undergraduate studies, where she worked with Dr. Ken Lukowiak, PhD. She also credits her current supervisor, Dr. Kara Murias, MD, PhD. “The support and mentorship I received during this time inspired me to pursue my PhD in neuroscience.” As Bevin continues to pursue her own neuroscience research she also hopes to inspire and mentor other younger researchers. Bravo Bevin! 🎉 Join us in celebrating the 10th anniversary of the O'Brien Institute for Public Health, whose members are passionate clinicians and leaders in community-based research. The University of Calgary institute was founded in 2014, enabled by a foundational gift from Gail and David O’Brien. We thank them for their generosity as it has helped the O’Brien Institute make great strides to improve health equity and impact public policy. Follow along as the O’Brien Institute highlights the many ways it has supported Alberta’s most vulnerable people, beginning with the story of Lexi Marr. The Calgary youth now has her own home, facilitated by the O’Brien Institute’s Health Equity HUB which unlocked federal funding for a Calgary program to combat youth homelessness. In 2014, Gail and David O’Brien made a foundational gift to the Cumming School of Medicine, establishing the O'Brien Institute for Public Health. Gail, LLD'10, a community leader, was passionate about medicine while David, LLD'10, who built his business career in Calgary, had always been interested in education. Today the O'Brien Institute is a leader in community-based research and is making an impact in health equity and public policy. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary this week, we’re highlighting some of our initiatives that are supporting Alberta’s most vulnerable citizens – like those that are helping to combat youth homelessness. Watch the video below to learn more about how work being done through our Health Equity HUB has changed lives for people like 22-year-old Lexi Marr who, last fall, was able to move into her own apartment in downtown Calgary. Join us in celebrating as we mark our 10-year anniversary! As the study of women’s neurology continues to gain ground, #UCalgaryMed neurology resident Dr. Hayley Thornton, MD'20, is at the forefront. Medical programs aim to train more specialists, including Dr. Thornton, as the field grows well beyond obstetrical neurology and spans a broad range of neurological illnesses such as stroke, epilepsy, headache and multiple sclerosis. The subspecialty enables a more fulsome approach to neurology through the lens of sex and gender as those influences become increasingly recognized in medicine and science. Dr. Thornton will begin a fellowship in women’s neurology at the University of Toronto in the fall of 2025. “For me as a trainee it took a lot of initiative to pursue this because, at the start of my residency, very few people had even heard of women's neurology,” says Dr. Thornton, now a fifth-year resident, whose work has focused on epilepsy in pregnancy, optimizing the women's neurology residency educational curriculum, and developing a shared decision-model tool for neurologic issues in pregnancy. She hopes to explore issues related to menopause and aging during fellowship, and ultimately, to practice as a general neurologist with an expertise in women's health and sex and gender influences. While researchers have uncovered hundreds of genes that influence facial features, there are still many questions about how genetics influence facial development and the sometimes strong resemblance between family members. “How is it that you have thousands of segregating genes influencing the shape of your nose or the overall shape of your face, and yet we can still say things like ‘in our family, my son has his grandmother’s nose,’” says Dr. Benedikt Hallgrimsson, PhD, professor and head of the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy at #UCalgaryMed. Environment also plays a role, Hallgrimsson says. For example, research shows kids who are malnourished look different from kids who are not. Join us in congratulating #UCalgaryMed's Dr. J Neil (JN) Armstrong, MD’81, associate professor emeritus, who was formally inducted into Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame (CAHF)! Dr. Armstrong has had a fascinating and successful career integrating medicine and aviation. He joined STARS in 1991 as a helicopter pilot, captain, where he spearheaded the first medical aviation service to carry blood on board and the first flight to deploy an airborne ultrasound. At the CSM, one of Dr. Armstrong’s main anaesthesia initiatives was to incorporate some of the validated safety processes used in aviation, such as the safe use of drug trays and carts, and checklists for safe surgery or unusual anaesthesia circumstances.
