Iċ-Ċentru tat-Traduzzjoni għall-Korpi tal-Unjoni Ewropea huwa aġenzija tal-Unjoni Ewropea. Stabbilit fil-Lussemburgu fl-1994, il-missjoni ewlenija tiegħu hija li jipprovdi servizzi ta’ traduzzjoni u servizzi lingwistiċi relatati lill-aġenziji deċentralizzati l-oħra tal-UE. Dan jista’ jgħin ukoll lil dawk l-istituzzjonijiet u l-korpi tal-UE li għandhom is-servizzi ta’ traduzzjoni tagħhom stess meta jkun hemm livelli massimi ta’ xogħol jew għal proġetti speċifiċi. B’kollox, iċ-Ċentru jittraduċi għal kważi 70 klijent. Fi tmiem l-2020, kellu total ta’ 220 membru tal-persunal, inklużi uffiċjali, aġenti temporanji u persunal b’kuntratt. GĦIDLI AKTAR

20 years since the EU’s ‘Big Bang’, the great enlargement that increased the EU’s linguistic landscape

20 years ago, on 1 May 2004, a special event marked the history of Europe: the fifth enlargement. Ten new countries joined the EU: Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. This event, known as the ‘Big Bang’, is the biggest enlargement in terms of people and number of countries, as well as new languages, with the number of official EU languages growing from 14 to 24.

On 9 May, Europe commemorates a key moment in its history – the Schuman Declaration of 1950, which laid the groundwork for what we now know as the European Union. This year’s International Annual Meeting on Computer-Assisted Translation and Terminology (JIAMCATT) was hosted in a hybrid form by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, France, and took place from 6 to 8 March 2024. The overarching theme of this year’s session was '(R)evolution: AI’s place within the language professions'.
