One such success story is AirToxMonitor, in collaboration with NanoLockin GmbH, Vitrocell Systems GmbH and Adolphe Merkle Institute, we submitted a proposal for the EUREKA Eurostars programme supporting innovative technologies, products and services, including the area of #engineering, #environment and life sciences. 🎯  The proposal was approved, securing €1.7 million, and the four-partner consortium began pioneering the first real-time on-site device to detect the potential toxic effects of ultrafine particles on living cells. This #innovation provides critical insights for implementing preventive measures in contaminated industrial and other environments. 🎯 Cluster 6 of Horizon Europe’s Pillar 2 is one of the most diverse #funding streams, supporting #research and innovation projects that advance sustainable #food systems, #biodiversity conservation and circular #economy solutions—all contributing to the European #GreenDeal, a key #EU policy priority. The 2025 draft Work Programme allocates €948.9 million to tackle pressing challenges such as ensuring a fair and sustainable food supply, restoring biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem services. But first, let’s dive into the story of PHOTONFOOD, a groundbreaking project revolutionising food safety through flexible mid-infrared photonic solutions for rapid farm-to-fork sensing of food contaminants. 🌱 🤝 PHOTONFOOD, an ambitious Horizon 2020 project, began as a promising idea which we proudly supported and has resulted in follow-up proposals. With €4.97 million of received funding and a multidisciplinary 13-partner consortium, the project set out to increase food safety through new photonic technology. At accelopment, next to the writing of the communication and dissemination #proposal parts, we provided primarily communication, dissemination and exploitation support, helping to enhance the outreach way beyond the consortium and the ECREAMS cluster. 🏆 Now, after four years of dedicated research, PHOTONFOOD has concluded, marking a significant milestone in real-time, on-site detection of food contaminants. The project’s solutions have been validated in real-world conditions, effectively detecting mycotoxins, fungal contaminants, pesticides and antibiotics in key food products such as wheat, nuts, dried fruits and aquaponic-based herbs. The first proposal submission for COVERGY received a score of 10 out of 15—disappointing for the proposed innovative idea and a strong consortium, but not quite enough for approval. But instead of giving up, the consortium, led by Universitat de Lleida in the second round, made a strategic decision: resubmitting the proposal under a better-fitting call topic. This dedicated effort paid off, securing the highest possible evaluation score—15 out of 15! This is how the SOLARX project officially launched, proving that persistence and adaptation can be key to success. Industry leaders and project partners like Qcells Europe are investing in this breakthrough technology, establishing a pilot production line to demonstrate its scalability and commercial potential. From achieving climate neutrality to advancing smart mobility and securing a #sustainable energy supply, the time to start preparing for September submissions is now! 🤝 Our journey in next-generation solar energy began in 2015 with CHEOPS, one of our early solar-energy projects. We supported the proposal writing, which led to its successful approval under Horizon 2020 programme, marking the start of our collaborations in perovskite (#PV) technology—a breakthrough for Europe’s solar energy sector. Coordinated by the Centre Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique (CSEM), Switzerland, #CHEOPS aimed to develop materials and production processes to scale up perovskite photovoltaics and create high-efficiency tandem solar cells. This pioneering project demonstrated how tandem cells—cheaper and more efficient than existing solar technologies—could revolutionise the market. ☀️ Beyond proposal writing, we later supported CSEM and the entire CHEOPS consortium with project management, communication and dissemination, ensuring that its groundbreaking innovations reached the right audiences. The project played a key role in overcoming barriers to future commercialisation, setting the stage for European leadership in solar energy.
