Open Robotics has really managed to do something incredible. At the close of the biggest ever ROSCon, I’m left with some big thoughts. Robotics has always been big and broad - we are expected to understand mechanical, electrical, software and systems engineering just as a starting point. We have robot arms, mobile robots, drones, legged and humanoid robots, any many other forms of embodied intelligence and function. We also have so many different sectors of applications, from industrial manufacturing, transport, logistics, education, healthcare, to deployments in subsea and space. The question is, how can such diverse, disparate and challenging areas possibly share enough common ground to have any meaningful overlap? All too often, diversity can lead to adversity. When there is a failure to understand and communicate across the gaps, it’s hard to make progress. But there is also tremendous strength in diversity, of technology, application and culture. With around 1,000 attendees at ROSCon 2024 and an estimated 1,000,000 ROS users (and ever faster growth), this community has shown how to harness that strength through open interfaces and communication. ROS is the open software middleware that connects all kinds of robotic technology with common interfaces. And Open Robotics is the open foundation that connects all kinds of roboticists with an incredible community. As the community continues to grow faster than ever before, I am left with great trust in the Open Source Robotics Alliance. The leadership showed great faith and transparency by sitting up on stage in front of all attendees for an open Q&A. To the board Steve Cousins, Yuki Nakagawa, Ryan Gariepy, Sabine Hauert and Brian Gerkey, the governance advisor VM (Vicky) Brasseur, and all longstanding members who have shaped and shepherded this community long before I entered it, thank you for your inspiring and exemplary leadership! I am excited to see how I can continue to grow and contribute within this space, both personally and professionally with AICA SA. An exciting week in Denmark comes to an end! 🇩🇰 Monday, we were lucky enough to get a private tour of Universal Robots state of the art (and truly collaborative) production site and HQ🤖 UR robots assembling UR robots is such an ironic and fun sight. Thanks to our hosts Nicolai Anton Lynnerup Rasmus Andersen and Jens-Jakob Bentsen for the warm welcome and the fruitful discussion around our participation as Polyscope X partner. Yesterday I had the privilege of visiting the new Universal Robots HQ in Odense to discuss our partner strategy with AICA SA to launch advanced learning and control capabilities to their PolyScope X platform. I am already in Odense for ROSCon 2024, so along with a general visit to UR and MiR it was a pleasure to have a private tour of the production and R&D before diving into productive roadmap and planning meetings.
