🌏 Politics matters for the success of anti-corruption and asset recovery efforts. That is the starting point of a two-year research project led by Saba Kassa, PhD and drawing on the experience of our International Centre for Asset Recovery (ICAR). Saba's new Working Paper: 💥 provides key insights into the political and governance factors that affect the performance of the justice system in relation to anti-corruption and asset recovery; 💥 offers guidance on assessing these factors systematically, including through a novel Assessment and Monitoring Framework; 💥 reveals how to use these assessments to develop adaptive strategies to strengthen the justice chain in line with changing contexts. A must-read for anyone – like us! – working to advance anti-corruption and asset recovery around the world. Feedback very welcome. https://lnkd.in/eBfNseR7

The Basel Institute has promoted anti-corruption Collective Action – constructive, sustained multi-stakeholder collaboration to raise standards of business integrity and address shared corruption challenges – for two decades. 👏 So we're very happy that anti-corruption leaders at the International Anti-Corruption Conference have named it a strategic priority: https://lnkd.in/eubXsr7X Nicola Bonucci, our Board Member and long-standing advocate of Collective Action, and Vanessa Hans, who leads our Private Sector work, represented the Basel Institute at the high-level meeting where these priorities were discussed. For more news on Collective Action, follow Collective Action at the Basel Institute. The state legal defence system and the public prosecutors' offices were the first institutions with which we started our work in Lima back in 2012. We are pleased to renew our commitment to the fight against corruption and the recovery of illicit assets with the Procuraduria General del Estado and the national network of state legal defence attorneys." Oscar was joined online by Iker Lekuona, Director of our International Centre for Asset Recovery, for the signing event. Press release (in Spanish): https://lnkd.in/euhJ9YmH

❓ Monday morning quiz: How can we make anti-corruption reforms more effective and sustainable? A) By focussing on collective behaviour rather than individual 🍎 "bad apples". B) By understanding how social norms can make people act irrationally. C) By designing context-specific strategies that recognise the multi-faceted and intrinsically human (i.e. messy) nature of corruption. D) All of the above. To find out, read Claudia Baez Camargo's new blog on a recent paper published with co-authors Ina Kubbe, PhD and Cheyanne Scharbatke-Church by Annual Reviews: https://lnkd.in/ehyGrSpu 📖 A link to the full paper, Corruption and Social Norms: A New Arrow in the Quiver, is in the blog.
