It's #WorldHumanitarianDay. What does positive impact in a #refugee camp actually look like? 👉👉 Part 2: Lebanon You may remember my recent post about how the Weinstein International Foundation, Victor Baba Jr. and others are teaching mediation in Kenya's #Kakuma refugee camp (if not, do look it up!). Today Anera, the NGO with American and Arab roots, takes us to #Chatila refugee camp in Lebanon. Here, Arizona State University's ASU Education for Humanity has implemented English courses with the help of Beekee's Beekee Hub technology. As project coordinator Mohammad Khatib explains in the video, any training solution must take into account that "we have a problem with the internet and electricity within the camps. The 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗸". Thanks to a programme incorporating Beekee technology, which allows to deploy 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿, these problems are solved and students (in the present case at least 20 per day) can access precious educational materials to improve their skills - here, learning English to increase chances on the job market. In this particular case, Arizona State University have confirmed in a small study how this innovative yet cost-effective approach yields much-improved student engagement, 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 "𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱" 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 18% 𝘁𝗼 70%. In the words of one of the facilitators: "𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀. 🔴🔴 Transforming Adult Education: Discover the Future with Singapore's interesting new ALC initiative ⬇️ The Adult Learning Collaboratory (ALC) is a groundbreaking initiative by Singapore's Institute for Adult Learning Singapore (IAL). What is new is mainly a coherent approach combining several success factors into one programme. Here are the key highlights: 📚 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 The ALC aims to develop future-oriented pedagogies, fostering enterprise transformation, and improving digital capabilities for mature workers. It addresses the growing demands of the future workforce. 🤝 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 Collaborating with 40 partners, including enterprises, educational institutions, researchers, and policymakers, the ALC is set to co-create and co-produce innovative solutions through iterative cycles of real-world experimentation. 🔍 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 1. User-Centric Co-Creation Adult learners actively participate in developing new pedagogies, ensuring solutions are tailored to both learner and industry needs. 2. Bill Gates on continuous improvement in #teaching. The talk is from 2009 but is still highly relevant. Teachers, instructors and professors deserve our respect; they hold the keys to our future. But we should also apply classic management techniques to help them understand what works and improve learning outcomes.

🔴🔴 Cindy Ngamba, the first Olympic Medal for the Refugee Team, and refugee aspirations 🥇 📖 Cindy Ngamba has just made history at the Paris Olympics by securing the first-ever Olympic medal for the Refugee Team. Cindy, a 25-year-old boxer, moved to the UK from Cameroon at the age of 11. She discovered boxing as a teenager, but despite winning national titles in three weight classes, her lack of UK citizenship enticed her to join the Refugee Olympic Team, where she carried the flag at the opening ceremony and now stands on the podium with at least a bronze medal. 🥉 The Refugee Olympic Team was initiated by the International Olympic Committee in 2016 to provide a platform for athletes displaced by conflict, persecution, or other crises. The team debuted at the Rio 2016 Olympics with 10 athletes and has grown significantly, with 37 athletes competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics. If you are curious, the excellent movie “The Swimmers” (Netflix) recounts the inspiring story of Yusra Mardini, a Syrian refugee swimmer who competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics. 🎬 But of course, the main aspirations of refugees are not to win Olympic medals – also because there are only ca. 1300 medals available, while there are around 120 million forcibly displaced people in the world. As experts such as Milena Belloni and Aysen Ustubici have repeatedly pointed out, refugees have aspirations such as continuing education, finding decent employment, reuniting with family members, integrating and building a life in their host country, having the freedom to travel, or engaging in cultural and social activities. 🌍 Education consistently comes out among the top ambitions of forcibly displaced people in the world. Yet 80% of those 120 million live in the Global South, and access to education can be difficult or expensive. This is particularly unfortunate, as education has been proven to be essential for peaceful and sustainable development, and for the future prosperity of refugees’ home countries. 📚 At Beekee, we offer technologies which enable aid organisations to deploy digital learning in low-resource environments, without the need for internet access or power.
