👏 Please join us in congratulating George Coukos, Director of Oncology at Lausanne University Hospital and Director of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in Lausanne, on his election to the U.S. National Academy of Medicine (NAM). Membership of NAM represents one of the highest honours issued to clinicians and scientists, recognising exceptional achievement and commitment to service in the fields of health and medicine. In naming Coukos as a member, NAM cited his landmark discoveries in the realm of tumour immunology and immunotherapy, which have helped to lay the groundwork for new cancer treatment pathways. 🧑🔬 We are so proud to count George among our members – his and his colleagues' work has not only established Lausanne as a global hotspot for oncology innovation, but also opened new doors for countless cancer patients. We can think of few people more deserving of this honour and recognition. Bravo, George and Ludwig Cancer Research!

💡 The survival rate for breast cancer patients is 99% when the cancer is caught very early, versus only 26% when the disease is detected at a later stage. That's just one example of why liquid biopsies, with their potential for disease monitoring and detection, could be a game-changer for cancer patients. For our October newsletter, Damien Lapray, Co-Founder of Hedera Dx, explains how liquid biopsies are being used now and how they have the potential to revolutionise cancer treatment. 👉 Read Damien's story and learn about Hedera Dx's work in the full article here: https://lnkd.in/evfK3-tg

🔬 Did you know that only a handful of liquid biopsy-based diagnostic tools have been approved by the FDA, even though scientists started researching them decades ago? A non-invasive method, they have the potential to revolutionise medical diagnostics, but there are still several obstacles to overcome. For our October newsletter, we had the pleasure of speaking to Sylvain Perriot, Founder of Lermed, about how liquid biopsies work and why they’ll be crucial as we enter the era of personalised medicine. 👉 Check out his insights in the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ewStYgbD

🚀 You may have heard about our Vanguard Accelerator programme, but what do you know about the Vanguard jury? The jury meets four times a year, with two carefully selected projects presented each time. Each year, the Vanguard Accelerator supports two to four projects. It's a committee of around thirty experts covering every part of the digital health value chain, including clinicians, nurses, hospitals, IT, regulators, investors, industry representatives, marketing and serial-entrepreneurs. But what do these people actually do? 💬 They offer 360° feedback on the projects submitted. 💡 They act as frontline experts, sharing their expertise in their fields. 🤝 They take on a leading role for projects. Although it's not an official part of the role, some jury members may even join the advisory boards of the companies enrolled in the accelerator, establishing a long-lasting relationship that goes well beyond the duration of the programme. 📆 Interested in applying for the Vanguard Accelerator? The latest deadline for applications is 8th November, and (virtual) presentations to the jury will take place on the afternoon of 27th November. 👉 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dGvFHdA5

🍂 Happy World Migratory Bird Day! When autumn sets in, we turn our eyes to our biotope, to see whether our seasonal visitors have returned to campus. The pond is a winter haven for jack snipes – a rare species in Switzerland – and other animals. It's a wonderful spot for some bird-watching, in the upcoming weeks. Why not take a moment to pop down sometime to see who's flown in? 👀 A special thanks to the partners of this wonderful initiative that enabled our urban pond to live and develop over the last few years: Etat de Vaud, Ville de Lausanne et Commune d'Épalinges.
