Handbook on gender-responsive police services for women and girls subject to violence Strengthening the justice sector response, particularly that of law enforcement, has consistently been cited as one of the most challenging issues when responding to violence against women and girls. A positive initial contact experience with police is crucial for survivors of violence and a high-quality police and justice response must be available and accessible to all women and girls who are navigating an often-complex justice system, especially those who are most marginalized and are at greater risk of experiencing violence. To respond to this need, UN Women, under the framework of the UN Joint Global Programme on Essential Services, and in partnership with UNODC and the IAWP, have developed a handbook on gender-responsive police services for women and girls subject to violence. With African Development Bank support, Uganda takes first step to embedding circular economy model into national strategy Uganda has taken a major step towards creating a circular economy to drive sustainable growth and green industrialisation in line with its Vision 2040 national agenda. With the support of the African Development Bank, the country launched the circular economy roadmap process on 31 January 2024 in the capital, Kampala. Representatives of the government and the African Development Bank attended. The initiative, implemented jointly with the African Circular Economy Alliance (ACEA) and backed through the Bank’s Africa Circular Economy Facility (ACEF), will engage government policymakers, businesses and civil society organizations in efforts to tap the full potential of circularity to accelerate progress towards sustainable development goals and climate action. 📝https://lnkd.in/d8cNSjyg (African Development Bank Group) #CenterForAdvocacyAndGlobalGrowth

Will developing countries benefit from the renewables boom? The technology already exists to bring clean energy to rural communities in developing countries that have previously never had access to any kind of electricity. However, as Moritz Brauchle, managing director of Africa GreenTec Madagascar, explains, these countries will continue to need support to turn their backs on fossil fuels. Africa GreenTec is a social enterprise which provides sustainable energy solutions to some of the 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa currently living without any access to electricity. With backing from the UN, the company installs minigrids – stand-alone networks run on renewable energy – to supply people in a small community or town with clean electricity. UNESCO unveils new AI roadmap for classrooms Less than 10 per cent of schools and universities follow formal guidance on using wildly popular artificial intelligence (AI) tools, like the chatbot software ChatGPT, according to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which hosted more than 40 ministers at an groundbreaking online meeting. Governments worldwide are in the process of shaping appropriate policy responses in a rapidly evolving education landscape, while further developing or refining national strategies on AI, data protection, and other regulatory frameworks, according to UNESCO. However, they are proceeding with caution. Risks to using these tools can see students exposed to false or biased information, some ministers said at the global meeting. The debate revealed other common concerns, including how to mitigate the chatbots’ inherent flaws of producing glaring errors. Ministers also addressed how best to integrate these tools into curricula, teaching methods, and exams, and adapting education systems to the disruptions which generative AI is quickly causing. How Fintech Can Help Nanks Tackle Deforestation Banks are in the business of managing risk. Loan money to a bad payer and you may suffer big financial losses. Let laundered or illicit money pass through your bank and you could incur fines and regulatory punishments. The success of banking and financial institutions depends on the quality, availability and efficiency of cost benefit analyses to accurately assess risk. It’s at the core of how they operate, and it’s what makes them primed to tackle the environmental and deforestation risks in their businesses. Key data: This is what parents think of schools The Varkey Foundation poll, which surveyed over 27,000 parents in 29 countries, found little to no correlation between what parents thought of their country’s schools and how students in their country performed in PISA, the international standardized test for 15-year olds. For example, while students in Japan scored highly in the latest round of PISA, just 36% of Japanese parents rated its free-to-attend schools as good (notably, private after-hours tutoring is very common in the country). Conversely, students in Indonesia performed well below average in PISA – even though 56% of Indonesian parents rated the country’s schools as good. 📝 https://lnkd.in/dtRdvsQ2 (Varkey Foundation) #CenterForaAdvocacyAndGlobalGrowth

How the financial sector can help restore cooperation in a divided world The year 2024 will be consequential for global financial and monetary systems. Despite political, economic and geopolitical uncertainties in the United States and elsewhere, the financial sector can play a constructive role on issues of systemic importance, thereby strengthening system integrity and global cooperation for the benefit of all. 📝https://lnkd.in/dFRJR-Ez (World Economic Forum) #CenterForaAdvocacyAndGlobalGrowth
