Just days ago, we reunited with our main partners Syensqo, UM6P - University Mohammed VI Polytechnic, and OCP Group at the Climate Impulse aircraft construction site at 49SUD in Les Sables d’Olonne! This gathering provided a great opportunity to witness the progress on the cockpit and to define the next steps as we prepare for key milestones in the coming months. The presence of Ilham Kadri from Syensqo, Hicham El Habti from UM6P, Hanane Mourchid from OCP, Raphaël DINELLI from 49SUD and Bertrand Piccard from Climate Impulse underscored the spirit of collaboration driving this pioneering project. Two weeks ago, Climate Impulse’s main partners —Syensqo, UM6P - University Mohammed VI Polytechnic, and OCP Group— gathered at 49SUD in Les Sables d'Olonne, right at the heart of our aircraft’s construction site. This on-site meeting was a unique opportunity to see the progress firsthand and collaborate closely on the next steps toward achieving zero-emission flight. Together, we’re tackling some of the toughest technical challenges—such as maintaining liquid hydrogen at -253°C and designing advanced thermal tanks for safe and efficient storage. The advanced composites and materials technology, contributed by the project’s technological partners, are critical for building a lightweight, durable aircraft that maximises performance, from the fuselage to the hydrogen tanks. Our shared dedication and innovative spirit are propelling us toward our ultimate goal: a non-stop, zero-emission flight around the world by 2028. 48 hours, 12 speeches, and 50'000 steps later, I’m leaving New York Climate Week feeling energised by the collective ambition of the economical world to tackle the climate crisis and the daily waves of eco-pessimism we face. Here, we were speaking about concrete actions, not only wishful thinking. Below are three key takeaways feeding my Foundation’s work at this crucial moment: - Hydrogen isn’t a magic wand, but it’s a powerful tool. Especially for sectors like aviation, where alternatives are scarce, hydrogen offers a real pathway to decarbonisation. Some people still laugh about it in Europe, but India is already working on a hydrogen industry. In this space, Climate Impulse’s attempt to perform the first non-stop round-the-world zero emission flight, powered by green hydrogen, is more than just a flight – it’s a flagship for climate action and innovation. And this isn’t only our adventure; it belongs to all of us. I encourage everyone to follow along and join hands as we push boundaries and demonstrate what’s possible with today’s technologies. - The world looses $4.6 trillion a year on wasted energy. That’s why energy efficiency must be at the forefront of the climate agenda. Not only for the environment, but also for the economy. It’s not just about producing more renewable energy: we must do all it takes to use it wisely. And a lot of solutions exist to do so! - Innovation goes beyond technology – it’s also about reinventing business models. Servitisation (efficiency-as-a-service), where we sell the use rather than the ownership of climate solutions, can boost the adoption of clean technologies and shift our economies from quantity to quality. This is why we are working with European Investment Bank (EIB) to set up an Energy Efficiency Initiative. It’s time to triple up the renewable energy and double down the energy waste. This could be the first hydrogen-powered aircraft to fly non-stop around the globe. As the aviation industry looks to lower its carbon emissions, the race is on to find an alternative way of fueling air travel, and hydrogen is looking to be a frontrunner. To prove its potential, a team in Les Sables-d’Olonne, France is building a hydrogen-powered aircraft, which aims to be the first to circumnavigate the globe without emissions. It goes by the name Climate Impulse. Leading the team is Swiss explorer Bertrand Piccard, who was part of the Solar Impulse team that flew a solar-powered plane around the world between 2015 and 2016. He believes the project could be an important catalyst for the aviation industry. "A lot of people say that you cannot decarbonize aviation. Climate Impulse, that’s my call against defeatism, against skepticism, against all the people who say there are no solutions," Bertrand Piccard told Arjun Kharpal on CNBC Tech: The Edge.
