📰 La chronique du Club Diplomatique de Genève "𝐋𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐭 𝐝𝐞 𝐥’𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐫, 𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞́𝐞 𝐨𝐮 𝐮𝐧 𝐯𝐨𝐞𝐮 𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐮𝐱?" découvrez notre dernière chronique dans l'L'AGEFI avec Ulrich Lehner, Président de Association Suisse-ONU / Gesellschaft Schweiz-UNO / UN Association Switzerland. «Nous sommes à un tournant de l’histoire… celui du délitement ou celui du sursaut.» C’est en ces termes alarmants que le secrétaire général des Nations unies António Guterres a interpellé en septembre 2021 la communauté mondiale afin que celle-ci se mobilise en faveur d’un nouveau consensus international visant à améliorer le présent et à préserver l’avenir. Le Sommet de l’avenir, qui a réuni les représentants des Etats membres des Nations unies en ouverture de la 79e Assemblée générale à New York, il y a un peu plus d’un mois, avait pour ambition de répondre à cet appel. Le sommet rassembla les dirigeants des Etats, mais il fut précédé par des nombreuses consultations des gouvernements, de la société civile, de la jeunesse et du secteur privé. Il en résulta l’adoption par consensus d’un Pacte pour l’avenir, un document certes non contraignant, mais qui a le mérite de remobiliser et de responsabiliser les gouvernements en faveur de la coopération multilatérale, du développement durable, de la paix et de la sécurité et des droits humains. 🌍 Today marks the opening of the 34th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent in Geneva, a vital gathering for shaping the future of humanitarian response. This conference brings together 191 National Societies, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC, the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC, and states, who are coming together to tackle some of the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. This year’s conference will focus on addressing critical global issues such as the escalating impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities, the complex realities of migration, and the urgent need to reinforce community resilience in conflict zones. Discussions will also cover the increasing importance of digital transformation in humanitarian work, aiming to better serve those most affected by crises. The ICRC and IFRC have released a joint statement calling for unified action to uphold humanitarian principles in a time of unprecedented global challenges. 🌐 Today, we come together to reflect on and celebrate an institution that has profoundly shaped global diplomacy, peace, and cooperation—the United Nations. As we commemorate the 79th anniversary of its founding, we are reminded of its unwavering commitment to the values that unite us: peace, security, human rights, and sustainable development for all. The United Nations Office at Geneva, as a central hub of multilateral cooperation, plays a critical role in addressing global challenges. From advancing disarmament to fostering dialogue on human rights and humanitarian action, it unites diplomats, civil society, and international organizations to seek solutions for peace and sustainability. The Diplomatic Club of Geneva is proud to contribute to this spirit of dialogue and exchange, in collaboration with its institutional partners, Département fédéral des affaires étrangères DFAE, Etat de Genève, and the Ville de Genève.

🇪🇺 The Diplomatic Club of Geneva had the pleasure of welcoming Ambassador Petros Mavromichalis, EU Ambassador to Switzerland, for an exclusive dialogue on 𝐒𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐳𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝-𝐄𝐔 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞’𝐬 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐬. The discussion, moderated by Prof. Christine Kaddous, Director of the Centre for European Legal Studies at the Université de Genève, touched on the EU’s influence in addressing global challenges such as climate change and security, while also underscoring its importance for Switzerland and its citizens. We are optimistic that an institutional agreement can be reached by the end of the year, solidifying these essential partnerships.
