At our plantations in São Paulo state in Brazil, we rotate sugarcane with soybeans to improve soil health, increase yields and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the need for synthetic fertilisers. “Soybeans fit well into our sugarcane rotation. They fix nitrogen in the soil and have enabled us to make production gains of up to 10% over the past five years,” says LUIZ GUSTAVO ARES KABBACH, agronomic planning manager at COFCO International Brazil. Leveraging natural ways to fertilise crops is part of our climate strategy. Improved productivity creates value for the business, with farming teams harvesting 60 bags of soy per hectare, compared to the national average of 55 bags. Many thanks to the IFACC Initiative, a collaboration between Tropical Forest Alliance at the World Economic Forum, The Nature Conservancy and UN Environment Programme, for an insightful and inspiring event at The Gherkin as part of the London Climate Action Week this Monday. It was an honour to be among the panelists speaking about "Scaling Innovative Finance Mechanisms for Sustainable Land Use in Latin America", sharing the role COFCO International has to play in the transition to sustainable agriculture, work done to date and opportunities for collaboration with the finance sector. Very pleased to hear the strong alignment amongst all in the room on the importance of farmers being at the centre of this transition, and on the need to finance restoration of degraded lands so that they can be used for agriculture, reducing pressure on natural ecosystems. 🌱

COFCO International's emission reduction targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This is a significant moment that marks the continued importance of Chinese companies in driving a green transition throughout their value chains. COFCO is a signatory of the Agriculture Sector Roadmap to 1.5°C, a sector-wide plan for addressing deforestation in supply chains, facilitated by the Tropical Forest Alliance with support from WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development. As signatories to the roadmap, companies committed to submitting emissions reduction targets to SBTi for validation, or publishing other third-party validated land-use change targets by July 2024. COFCO’s SBTi validated targets cover all its major business operations, including soybean, maize and freight - making this a milestone for the company and for global supply chains, given China’s role as the world’s largest buyer and importer of Brazilian soybeans. At TFA we are encouraged by this news, and look forward to seeing more companies join COFCO International in having their commitments validated by SBTi. https://lnkd.in/eX-jUJ8M

Our teams in Argentina, Brazil and Switzerland had the honour of hosting the external directors of the Board of Directors of COFCO Group, the world’s largest agri-business by asset value. The directors visited our global HQ in Geneva, regional South Cone head office in Buenos Aires, sugar operations in the State of São Paulo and port terminal expansion in Santos.
