Making Fibreglass Recycling a Reality
Info
Composite Recycling has pioneered a novel approach for recycling glass fibre-reinforced plastics (GFRP) into reclaimed glass fibres and pyrolysis oil, in an energy-efficient and economically viable way, such that they can be reused in the manufacturing of high-quality new composites. Fibreglass waste from boats hulls, wind turbine blades, airplane and auto interiors, etc, represents a mounting problem for the industry and for the environment. Our mission is to divert such waste away from landfill and incineration by transforming them into high-value secondary raw materials that can enter the circular economy. Our business is two-fold: (1) we service clients who need a better solution for disposing of their fibreglass waste, and (2) we supply the outputs to manufacturers who want to incorporate recycled content into their production.

♻️ Breaking New Ground in Sustainability 🌍 We’re keen to share the latest pictures of some recyclability test results - of samples from our client ROUSSEAU, a major French manufacturer of composite-based silos & tanks for agriculture and industry. Yes, these sizeable items can be made from polyester resin and fiberglass ! In tests using our next-generation #thermolysis process, we have shown that we can reclaim the glass fibers from the production waste of Rousseau's fibreglass silos & tanks. Once this process is scaled up, the aim is to take these fibers and reintegrate them into the production of new composite products. Talk about #circularity ! 🔄 By enabling Rousseau to (1) keep their fibreglass production waste out of landfills and (2) work toward ramping up the percent of recycled content in their products in the future 🌱 we are striving to enable them meet growing demands for greener solutions from regulators and customers. #composite #polyester #filamentwinding #bulk

🚨 Let's talk about the other 10% ... While wind turbines are often hailed as a beacon of green energy, there's a significant challenge that’s often overlooked—the blades. Although it’s often said that wind turbines are 90% recyclable, this statistic is by weight and refers to the metal bases, which are extremely heavy. The #sustainability problem lies in the bulky blades. These account for only ~10% of the total weight, but are made of fiberglass composites that are extremely durable...and so very hard to recycle. Currently, most of these blades end up in landfills. WindEurope expects around 25,000 tonnes of blades to reach the end of their operational life each year by 2025, and most of these will be landfilled if no viable, industrial-scale recycling options emerge. We believe it’s time to change that and ensure this green technology remains green from start to finish. At Composite Recycling, we’re tackling this issue by developing solutions to recycle fiberglass, including wind turbine blades. Our goal is to turn these difficult-to-recycle components into new materials for future composites, creating a truly circular economy. 📩 Get in touch if you want to be part of the solution. #composites #greentech #windenergy #zerolandfill

♻️ Recycled – Recyclable – Healable! ♻️ We’re excited to announce our collaboration with CompPair Technologies Ltd., a fellow Swiss innovator driving sustainability and circularity in the composite industry. Together, we’re developing something truly groundbreaking—the first-ever composite material that is Recycled, Recyclable, and Healable! We started with waste fibreglass, which we recycled with Composite Recycling's next-generation thermolysis treatment. We then sent the recycled fibers to our colleagues at CompPair, who applied their HealTech™ technology, resulting in a recycled composite material that’s also self-healing. And the best part? Once it’s time, we can recycle this wonder material and start the process over again! To road test this new-to-the-world technology, we are working with asso OBJECTIF DUNES on their eco-efficient rally buggy, an ideal environment to push performance to the limit and show how eco-friendly materials can deliver top results - while also cutting down on waste, costs, and downtime. Stay tuned for updates from the season...! In industries where parts are frequently replaced, this recycled, recyclable, healable material offers a sustainable alternative that’s future-ready. ✨ We’re always pushing the envelope of #composites innovation. Stay tuned for more developments, including recycled woven composites, coming soon...! #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #CompPair #EcoFriendly #Healable
