Swiss Datacenter Efficiency Association: Measured Efficiency for Sustainable and Compliant Operations

Info

The Swiss Datacenter Efficiency Association (SDEA) brings together industry and academic pioneers to ensure energy efficiency in datacenters is measured, not guessed. We provide advanced tools that not only measure efficiency but also ensure alignment with key industry standards and regulations. At the core of our offering is the SDEA Navigator – an integrated online tool that assesses full-stack efficiency across IT and datacenter infrastructures. While the Navigator incorporates industry-recognized standards such as EN 50600 and ISO/IEC 30134, it goes beyond these benchmarks by providing a more comprehensive, holistic approach to measuring energy performance. Through its three calculators for DC Infrastructure Efficiency, IT Infrastructure Efficiency, and Carbon Footprint, the SDEA Navigator enables datacenters to optimize their operations and ensure compliance with both local and international regulatory standards. Using the SDEA Navigator allows companies to not only measure their energy efficiency but also showcase it through SDEA Label, a modular certification that highlights best-in-class performance. Achieving this label enables organizations to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and ESG reporting, making their operational excellence visible to investors, clients, and regulatory bodies. Whether certifying IT infrastructure, DC infrastructure, or both, SDEA Label helps position companies as leaders in efficiency and environmental responsibility. In a world where rising technologies like AI and 5G demand more energy, the SDEA tools ensure datacenters can stay compliant, exceed evolving regulations, and stand out in an increasingly eco-conscious market. By leveraging SDEA Label, organizations reduce their carbon footprint, lower operational costs, and gain a competitive edge in the race for sustainability leadership.

📈 Double the Growth, Double the Emissions? Datacenter power demand is on track to drive a 100% increase in CO₂ emissions by 2030. This statistic may be alarming, but it doesn’t have to be inevitable. The path forward is clear: efficiency measured and not guessed, better IT utilization, low-carbon energy. Let’s redefine what growth looks like – sustainable, efficient, and future-proof. #CO2 #Emissions #CarbonFootprint

Optimizing IT & Datacenter Efficiency: Better Together 🤝 What good is an efficient datacenter if the IT systems inside are running underutilized servers? What value does an optimized IT infrastructure have if it’s sitting in a datacenter that wastes energy? Datacenter and IT efficiency go hand in hand – and with the SDEA Navigator, you can measure and optimize both, ensuring that every watt counts, from your servers to your cooling systems. #Datacenter #IT #Efficiency

Oracle and SMRs – Microsoft and Three Mile Island: Digital giants turning to nuclear has made quite some headlines lately (and led to engaging discussions on this platform). It's clear that as AI reshapes the digital landscape, the energy demands on our infrastructure are hitting unprecedented levels. And nuclear power is emerging as a key contender to meet these demands, as outlined in a recent RTS - Radio Télévision Suisse segment by Sophie Iselin, featuring our president, Babak Falsafi. Is nuclear energy the answer, or should we reflect on whether all uses of AI truly justify the environmental cost they incur?

Focusing on Scope 3? We Might Ignore the Bigger Problem 👀 In the DC industry, Scope 3 emissions have been getting a lot of attention lately. And for good reason – they’re a significant part of the carbon footprint, especially in the "white space". Looking at the entire datacenter’s operations, however, a recent study (link in comments) found that operational emissions still dominate, accounting for a whopping 76% of total GHG emissions in datacenters. Some key findings: • 𝗗𝗖 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, including electricity consumption for servers, storage, cooling, and other infrastructure, produced 𝟵𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗢𝟮𝗲 in 2020 • 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, which include the production and transportation of physical hardware and construction of DCs, contributed 𝟯𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗢𝟮𝗲 Electronics manufacturing for DC equipment alone produced 23 million tonnes CO2e, with an additional 7 million tonnes CO2e from construction and infrastructure. Reducing Scope 3 embodied emissions is essential. But to make meaningful progress in decarbonizing the sector, we can’t afford to overlook the day-to-day emissions tied to running our IT infrastructures. #datacenters #carbonfootprint #emissions

What if DC emissions were more than 𝟳𝘅 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 than you thought? According to 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙣, that’s the reality for some of the biggest names in tech: The real emissions from in-house data centers could be up to 662% higher than officially reported. How is this possible? Much of it comes down to “creative accounting” – companies purchase renewable energy credits (RECs) that don’t reflect the energy actually consumed at their datacenters. The result? The numbers look good, but the actual environmental impact is far worse. As AI and cloud computing continue to soar, are we prepared to face the real carbon cost of the digital age?

Data center emissions likely 662% higher than big tech claims. Can it keep up the ruse?

Servers: Uptime ✔️ Performance ✔️ Efficiency❓ In today’s digital world, uptime and performance are non-negotiable. But just because all systems are up and running, are they also efficient? Servers running below capacity might be quietly wasting energy and driving up costs in the background: • They consume power without delivering full value • Underutilized servers can lead to unnecessary hardware investments • Inefficient server utilization means higher operational cost With growing pressure to meet sustainability targets, optimizing your IT infrastructure is a simple yet effective way to reduce your carbon footprint. #server #efficiency #carbonfootprint
