There have been more than 800,000 cross-border identification requests via eIDAS ID already! The eIDAS Digital ID solution allows European citizens to prove and verify their ID when accessing online services in other Member States. This already works and goes like this: 1. You request an online service in another EU state. 2. You are asked to authenticate yourself. 3. You choose your own country's eIDAS eID for the authentication. 4. A request is sent to your country's citizen’s Identity Provider (IdP) for authentication via the eIDAS network. 5. The authentication result is returned to the service provider. 6. Authentication is complete and you can access the service.     There are currently 65 projects actively reusing eID such as the European Data Portal, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the e-Justice Portal. It's very interesting to see the growing adoption of digital identities usage in the EU.

The NOBID Consortium is the 3rd EUDI pilot project currently underway. Composed by a set of Nordic and Baltic countries + Italy and Germany, this project is testing a very important use case: -> 𝗣𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 The goal is that the EUDI wallet (once available in all member states) supports both domestic and cross-border payments, using the Digital Euro. This use case is based on the existing infrastructure used for bank payments including SCT instant payments and traditional account-to-account transfers. If the pilot goes well, EU citizens can expect to use their own EUDI wallets to authorise and make payments when buying products/services in an EU member state. Image: NOBID Consortium’s website

By 2026, 500 million people will be regularly making verifiable claims using a digital identity wallet. This is Gartner's prediction when it comes to the evolution of traditional identity verification. It's supported by some important observations and claims such as: 𝟭) 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹 It doesn't make sense to constantly ask people to do the ID-plus-selfie process every time they sign up for something new. 𝟮) 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 As processes move online and people use different services, there is a need for other attributes beyond identity data. Think of educational and professional qualifications, employment records, healthcare data, etc. 𝟯) 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆 One of the benefits of portable digital identities, specially when using verifiable credentials, is that people get to control what information is shared and with whom. Ecosystems of issuers can control who verifies these identities and the users themselves can store and keep their information with them, only revealing what's necessary when necessary. eIDAS is accelerating this in the EU. Multiple US states have already their own solutions or adopted Google's or Apple's wallets. Looking at the real-life benefits of portable digital identities, there's a clear path to 500 million users and beyond.

You may have been noticing an organization called The Global Acceptance Network cropping up in your LinkedIn feed recently, particularly if you’re in the identity space. Dock are founding members, and the reason that we wanted to be part of The GAN is because we believe they’re working to establish something that is lacking today. A unified trust layer for the internet. I’ll try to explain (suggestions on improvements welcome). An essential part of decentralized identity ecosystems are trust registries. These are inherent in many solutions (including DOCK) and they ensure that organizations working within these ecosystems know which companies/and or individuals they working with, not because it is on a blockchain or data base, but because there has either been a ‘real world’ identity verification check, or because they have a pre existing relationship and have invited them to join. This ecosystem of administrators, credential issuers, verifiers and more is trusted and facilitates highly efficient and structured information sharing with a clear set of boundaries. However, as useful as these trust registries are they’ll never fulfil their potential if they are cut off from entities not part of that ecosystem. We already have enough data silo’s, we don’t need any more. What we will need is the ability to link these registries, to make them more open, facilitating external entities to join. We need a trust registry of trust registries, a unified trust layer if you will that…"enables seamless, secure, and privacy-preserving data exchange across all boundaries.” to quote from the website. GAN is a consortium dedicated to facilitating this fundamental change, bringing together users of decentralized identity technology with the organizations building and creating it.
