Great to meet up with Secretary of State of the Land Rhineland-Palatinate Heike Raab and other German media figures at this week's Content Convention in Mainz to discuss broadcasting policy in Germany and Europe as a whole. An important discussion, particularly in light of the current debate about the future regulation of #PublicServiceMedia in Germany. I had the opportunity to highlight how trusted German PSM is and how their digital presence must be protected if they are to be able to compete and thrive into the future. It was also great to hear a strong defence of PSM from our good colleagues SWR's Kai Gniffke and Deutschlandradio's Stefan Raue who talked about its unique role and remit. #ConCon24

Today I was very pleased to speak at a Senate hearing in Italy on public service media’s challenges in a digital era. I spoke on the importance of adequate and reliable funding on behalf of our Italian Member Rai - Radiotelevisione Italiana Rai has been underfunded for years with an increase of just 3% from 2019-2023. This puts #PublicServiceMedia at a disadvantage, especially against global big tech players and media giants whose revenues have soared by 74-78% over the same period. This disparity threatens its ability to innovate and serve audiences effectively. The European Media Freedom Act mandates that public service media has sustainable, predictable funding to fulfill its remit. Reliable, multi-year funding tied to Rai’s remit is crucial. To be precise, Rai’s five-year charter should align with a funding commitment of the same duration to allow them to plan effectively as is the case in other countries such as the UK, Germany & Denmark.   As EU Member States begin to implement the #EMFA, we will continue to advocate for the principles around funding and independence to be upheld.
