This strategy paper, developed in collaboration with Empa, will set a new course for the handling of #ewaste: #SouthAfrica faces similar challenges in e-waste recycling as many newly industrialized countries: The heaps of e-waste are growing, but disposal and recycling are often inadequate or unsafe. 📁In June 2024, the South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment published, for the first time, a comprehensive e-waste management strategy. An important basis for this strategy was provided by the Sustainable Recycling Industries program, financed by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). ♻️Empa's activities included, for example, the training of auditors who check the quality of e-waste handling processes at #recycling companies. The program is managed together with the World Resources Forum. With the new strategy paper, the country now has comprehensive and uniform guidelines for the first time in order to better overcome these challenges - a huge milestone for the country. Treating #skindisease, such as atopic #dermatitis and #psoriasis, with more success – this is a novel approach: 👉 Nanoceramic "stars" that open the skin deep enough to allow for large therapeutic molecules to enter and deliver directly to the affected areas. Novel approach taken to treat psoriasis or #neurodermatitis, for example: #Nanoceramic "stars" create tiny skin lesions that facilitate the delivery of therapeutic molecules directly to the affected areas of the skin. The problem so far is that active ingredients, applied in conventional ointments or lotions, can't penetrate the skin deeply enough - thus the need to develop a more effective solution. In terms of manufacturing, this method is 🔹Cost efficient: a polymer casting mold reduces costs compared to traditional laser processes 🔹Sustainable, as future iterations aim to create biodegradable stars, allowing for easy removal after use The project is being carried out by Michael Stuer (High Performance Ceramics Lab) and Patrik Hoffmann (Advanced Materials Processing Lab) in collaboration with Aldena Therapeutics and funded by Innosuisse. Last Thursday, we welcomed the new mentees of feM-LEAD, a program to increase the proportion of female leaders at Eawag, PSI Paul Scherrer Institut, Eidg. Forschungsanstalt WSL and Empa! Particularly in STEM, the proportion of women decreases with each career level. Increasing the number of women in leadership positions is a top priority for the research institutions in the #ETHDomain. One measure, among others, is feM-LEAD (female Mentoring: Leadership for Equity And Diversity), a cross-institutional mentoring program aimed at women who are not yet in a leadership position but are interested in getting there. The 21 new candidates taking part in the 5th edition will benefit from one-to-one mentoring, complete a personal assessment, attend leadership and development courses, work on their networking and visibility and benefit from each other's experience through peer coaching. 👏Many thanks to Empa Director Tanja Zimmermann for the inspiring keynote speech. We wish everyone a great start and an enriching experience! They have won more than 10 leading companies in #IoT as customers and secured CHF 2M in seed capital. PEROVSKIA SOLAR AG is in the fast lane. These easy-to-integrate designer #solarcells either eliminate the need for batteries or extend their lifespan, opening up the possibility of powering any device with #solarenergy. Whereas conventional silicon solar cells are complex and expensive to produce on a customized basis and are inefficient in poor lighting conditions, these new and innovative #perovskite solar cells can be printed in any size – and at low cost. With their high efficiency, they can power almost any indoor electronic device in bright home and office lighting. The Empa spin-off is now supported by Kickfund from Venture Kick and the venture capital company D&FG Elements as well as an international coalition of business angels. 🔗News article: https://lnkd.in/ehSw4aCu 🔗Previous article: https://lnkd.in/e-wwpAp2 🔗Perovskia Solar website: https://perovskia.solar/ Author: Manuel Martin Anand V.

Cleantech company Synhelion recently inaugurated the world's first industrial plant for the production of #solarfuels. This piece of Empa technology keeps it running: 🧱Bricks. In particular, #bricks that serve as a temporary storage for the enormous heat of up to 1'200 degrees Celsius which develops on the solar receiver and is primarily used to operate the reactor. Overnight, the surplus heat in the reservoir supplies the reactor with energy and keeps it running. 💡As none of the refractory bricks available on the market were designed for these extreme conditions, Synhelion approached Empa: In a two-year project funded by Innosuisse, Empa scientists Gurdial Blugan and N. Sena Yüzbasi, together with Synhelion, developed a suitable #ceramic and are currently refining the material to make it even more durable. 🔗 Read on: https://lnkd.in/eSFRETXH 🔗Previous article (2021): https://lnkd.in/dMDA648 📷️Image: Synhelion Author: Anna Ettlin
