🎓 Excited to announce that I graduated with a Master's degree in Quantum Engineering from ETH Zürich! I am honored to have received the Willi Studer Prize, which has been an incredible recognition of the hard work and dedication behind an excellent transcript. During these two years at ETH, I have grown immensely both academically and personally. Thanks to the master's program's strong hands-on focus, I had the chance to engage in cutting-edge research, collaborate with inspiring peers (Clara Henke and Luis Fernández Martínez, this is for you), and develop practical skills that will be invaluable in my future career. I would especially like to thank my supervisors and mentors from #qudev: Sebastian Krinner, Johannes Herrmann and Andreas Wallraff, as well as #hyqu: Uwe von Luepke and Yiwen Chu for all their guidance, support and advice. I am deeply grateful to the ETH Foundation and its donors for supporting me from the beginning of my Master's studies with an #ESOP scholarship, and the Quantum Center, ETH Zurich for honoring me with an INSPIRE Potentials award for my Master's thesis. I also want to extend my gratitude to my former supervisors and professors from my Bachelor's: Pol Forn-Díaz, John Calsamiglia and Rainer Dumke, who significantly influenced my interest in quantum physics and superconducting circuits that led me here. Last but certainly not least, I want to thank all my friends and family for their unconditional love and support. Finally, I am happy to share that I am continuing my journey at ETH Zürich, pursuing a PhD in the Hybrid Quantum Systems Group of Professor Yiwen Chu! Looking forward to the exciting opportunities ahead!

Vivid interest in quantum technologies It was a privilege and a pleasure for us to contribute once again to the Point Zero Forum, an annual gathering of central bankers, regulators, policymakers, industry leaders and technologists from around the world that took place this week in Zurich, organized by Elevandi — set up by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) — and the Swiss State Secretariat for International Finance SIF. An integral part of this three-day event are Innovation Tours, where participants can take a deep dive into cutting-edge technologies at Swiss companies and innovation labs. The Quantum Centre at ETH Zürich traditionally invites participants to experience state-of-the-art quantum technologies. This year, around 40 visitors across the banking, government, academic and private sectors came to see one of the places where the scientific foundations of tomorrow's quantum technologies are being laid. Our Executive Director Anu Unnikrishnan kicked off the programme with an overview of the activities at the Quantum Center, setting the scene for a technology-focused talk by Jean-Claude Besse, a senior scientist in Andreas Wallraff's Quantum Device Lab, on quantum computing, with a focus on superconducting qubits. Our guests then had the opportunity to visit two labs of the Quantum Device group — led by Nathan Lacroix and Josua Schär — as well as a lab of Jonathan Home's group (both at D-PHYS, ETH Zürich Zurich), where Moritz Fontboté Schmidt and colleagues gave an insight into experiments with trapped ions. For many of the participants, it was the first time they had had the opportunity to experience 'quantum' first hand. Their numerous questions demonstrated a deep interest in quantum technologies and the research underpinning the 'second quantum revolution' — making this a highly rewarding experience for guests and hosts alike. Anu Unnikrishnan takes over as new Executive Director We are delighted to announce that Anu Unnikrishnan has taken up the role of Executive Director. She joined the Quantum Centre in May this year and has been actively working with her predecessor Philipp Kammerlander throughout the transition period. During this time, many in the wider Quantum Centre community have already interacted with her, in particular at last week's General Meeting in Schwägalp (https://lnkd.in/dDJkjBP2). Anu completed her PhD in quantum cryptography at the University of Oxford in collaboration with the Sorbonne Université, working with Damian Markham and Vlatko Vedral. She then moved to ETH Zürich for a postdoc position in the Applied Cryptography Group of Kenny Paterson, where alongside her research Anu has enjoyed taking on roles in coordinating events, promoting diversity and representing scientific staff. Farewell to Philipp Kammerlander The General Meeting of the Quantum Center is in full swing. Yesterday, participants from across our community as well as distinguished guests arrived at Schwägalp, on the face of the Säntis mountain in northeastern Switzerland. Until tomorrow we have a dense and exciting programme (https://lnkd.in/dBS8zWYb) that combines scientific highlights with plenty of opportunities for networking and sharing ideas. The event also marked the handover of the position of Executive Director from Philipp Kammerlander, who will leave the Quantum Centre at the end of this month, to his successor Anu Unnikrishnan. The General Meeting was the perfect opportunity for our Founding Director Andreas Wallraff and everyone present to thank Philipp for his service and wish him well. As its first Executive Director, Philipp has made significant contributions to the development of the Quantum Center over the past two years. Together with his colleagues in the Executive Office and working with the Quantum Center leadership and PIs, he initiated a wide range of activities and initiatives — from our TEQx Workshops on technical aspects of research to establishing the Quantum Center Research Fellowships — and strengthened networks within the field of quantum science at ETH Zürich and with external university and industry partners, not least in the framework of the Swiss Quantum Days, where he has been a member of the organising committee since the very beginning. Philipp was also regularly seen at the lectern. He gave introductory talks at events such as the Quantum Engineering Commission Hackathon or the Quantum Center Lectures. But his greatest passion, perhaps, is the education of students. This was both in the context of the Quantum Center's offerings and as a lecturer in Quantum Information and Computation, for which he was twice awarded the Golden Owl teaching prize of the ETH student union VSETH - Verband der Studierenden an der ETH in 2021 and 2022. Philipp will remain at ETH Zurich as a lecturer, where he will teach two courses in the coming autumn semester (https://lnkd.in/dKxQw7ry). We would like to cordially thank Philipp for his outstanding achievements and commitment and wish him all the best for the future. Photos: Eva-Corinna Fritz

Researchers at ETH Zurich have shown that quantum states of single electron spins can be controlled by currents of electrons whose spins are evenly aligned. In the future, this method could be used in electronic circuit elements. https://lnkd.in/ekVG5_5P #QuantumPhysics #QuantumSciences Stepan Kovarik,
