The annual dolphin hunt in Taiji (Japan) began on 5 September and will last until March 2025… 😰 Every year, hunting boats corral pods of dolphins and other small whales into a cove. These dolphins are either taken from their family to be put on captive display for different aquaria or killed in an inhumane manner that causes prolonged suffering and distress. 🐬 This is based on unscientific reasons that #dolphins are eating the fish but the reality is because more fishing effort is increasing taking more and more fish out of the ocean without allowing them to rest or reproduce. There are so many dolphins killed at one time that the cove turns red with blood. Captive demand gives a further excuse for these killings. So please don’t buy a ticket to any facility that holds #cetaceans captive! Buying a ticket fuels the captive industry and encourages the building of new marine parks and more dolphin and whale capture to fill those tanks! For every one dolphin in captivity, seventeen are slaughtered! 🩸 🐋 Dolphins and #whales are part of larger, complex ecosystems in which each individual plays an important role. If they disappear from the ecosystems, this will not only affect their own species, but also many other species including the fish that the Japanese fishing fleets wish to protect. They have an irreplaceable role in the marine ecosystem as our allies in fighting the climate and biodiversity crises. They belong in the ocean. 💙 🫵 SIGN THE PETITION to urge the Governor overseeing these hunts to halt the distressing capture and killing of dolphins. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e4hZtSWt #Japan #Taiji #Hunting #OceanProtection #Ocean #Biodiversity #Aquarium

Working collaboratively to advance social enterprise and marine protection Objectives EDUCATION The Gallifrey Foundation seeks to foster social enterprise, applying commercial strategies to improve human and environmental well-being, rather than simply maximising profits for external shareholders. The Gallifrey Foundation supports several scholarships for a variety of students from primary, university and post-graduate education. In addition, the Gallifrey Foundation supports selected research in social enterprise. MARINE PROTECTION The Gallifrey Foundation seeks to identify collaborative opportunities to tackle the most pressing ocean conservation issues facing us today. There are many organizations already deeply involved in the issues we care about and our mission is to assist them by identifying synergies that could be exploited and roadblocks that could be overcome by working together. Our model of engagement is to partner with organisations, schools or businesses on the ground, draft a pilot project as a testing case, and then scale up the solutions based on the lessons learned.

gender equality 🟰 more robust solutions PLUS diversity 🟰 🤩🤩🤩

NOT GOOD if we consider treating women as a separate entity to men, then there is entitlement over them. this has to stop. NOW the fact that 14 states in the US have total abortion bans is putting women's lives and rights in jeopardy. the fact that women in Afghanistan have been reduced to chattel IN THE 21ST century and no government is working to change this is a terrifying sign of the times anything a man can do, a woman can do backwards and in heels! ACTION calling Gaia men who understand the benefits of including women in business, decision making and more to call out lack of fairness and invite women in - some men actively reduce to participate on panels without balanced female representation - call out boards without women representation - lookout for signs of mansplaining, interruption or eating into a woman's talking time - invite a woman to speak as a woman not as a woman having to act/speak like a man to be heard Boards with balanced gender yield 2-5% more profit, more climate friendly and sustainable solutions and a better working environment PS Now do the same for diversity! Friday was #InternationalWhaleSharkDay! Whale sharks are awe-inspiring creatures, not only for their size but also for their incredible role in our marine ecosystems. Shaping biological processes through their feeding habits and movement patterns, they help maintain the balance of the ocean’s ecosystems. Despite their peaceful nature, whale sharks face numerous threats. Their slow reproductive rate and long lifespan make them particularly vulnerable to human activities. Sadly, they’re often caught as bycatch, hunted for their fins, meat, and oil, and their habitats are increasingly under pressure. These majestic creatures need our protection now more than ever. What can you do to help? 🐟 Reduce your seafood consumption / choose sustainable seafood (to learn how, check out our post ‘Do’s and Don’ts of choosing sustainable seafood’). Removing the fish that sharks depend on for ourselves will obviously result in little or no food for them, but also the way we catch these fish can often be devastating for sharks. Every year, countless sharks are killed as bycatch. 🌿 Choose eco-friendly products. #Plastics and chemicals degrade whale shark habitats and harm marine life. 🗣️ Share the beauty and importance of whale sharks with others. Awareness is the first step toward their conservation. ⛵️Travel responsibly. If you’re lucky enough to see whale sharks in the wild, choose tour operators who prioritise the well-being of these creatures by following responsible tourism practices. Simple things include not swimming too close, not feeding them, not touching them, and not using flash photography. #WhaleSharkDay #GentleGiants #Shark #OceanConservation #OceanProtection #MarineLife #EndangeredSpecies #WildlifeProtection

As the Intersessional Work meetings will unfold this weekend in Bangkok and as a foretaste before #INC5, let's have a look at the behind the scenes. Working groups will be addressing financial mechanisms and means of implementation, and plastic products and chemical of concern. Civil Society Organisations have been denied access to these crucial discussions (it is to note this month's meetings are not negotiations like during the INC rounds), despite several Member States voicing that Observers should be invited to take part. Instead, each working group can include 12 "experts" only. Including some industry people with vested interests, who are also part of national delegations. The very few spots that CSO representatives managed to get were a tough fight. There is a clear unbalance here. The INC Secretariat always said the Observers' presence and expertise were crucial to the success of the Global Plastics Treaty. And yet, for the expert meetings this expertise is ignored. 🏃♀️ Missing your daily sports rush, now that the #Paris2024 Olympics are over and before the Paralympic Games start? Here's another race you should watch because it concerns all of us: that - crucial - to the #PlasticsTreaty #INC5 this November. 🥵 And trust us, IRL negotiations look more like a marathon with hurdles than a sprint. Help us overcome them by demanding a #StrongTreatyNow to your policy makers.

TIME TO RECONSIDER We have to really really really really change and challenge our preconceptions Status quo, keeping quiet, business as usual is NOT cutting it. Chaos theory is playing out as we ignore the frayed edges of society. Doing nothing about it doesn’t mean it goes away. A hard day with strong suggestions for actions by the inimitable Animah Kosai

🚨 LAST CALL TO ALL ENVIRONMENTAL NGOS, WORLDWIDE 🐺 🦫 Today is the last day you can contribute to protecting #wildlife in #Switzerland with regards to the revised law on hunting. Not only are wolves targeted, but also beavers and ibex, and potentially bears, lynx, otters, jackals and golden eagles later on. ⚖️ Despite being supposedly protected by national and international law, and AGAINST the people's will by referendum that took place in 2020, all these could be decimated. 📝 How can you help? Add the name of the organisation you represent at the bottom of this joint letter/scientific report: https://lnkd.in/eWycYx8n No matter where you are located or whether you're specialised in a specific environmental topic: each signature counts. 🙏 Huge thanks to the 65 NGOs who have already signed! You're a citizen and want to act? Details in comments. #NGO #Environment #Biodiversity #Nature #Wolf #Wolves #Lynx #Ibex #Otter #Beaver #Eagle #Bear #Jackal #Swisstainable #Hunting #MySwitzerlandHasWildlife #SwissWildlife
Switzerland has declared war on its wildlife. This is your last chance to help. Wolves, ibex and beaver are directly targeted with culling, shooting and trapping in Switzerland, while brown bear, lynx, otters, jackals and golden eagles have been singled out as "conflict species", thus potentially paving the way for further lethal control. Indeed, calls for lynx to be "managed" are growing and several motions have already been submitted to parliament. These species are native to Switzerland and all but the jackal are supposedly protected under national and international law. But federal legislation has been modified to allow for both the proactive and reactive regulation of wolves, ibex and beaver, against the will of the electorate that voted in a 2020 national referendum against weakening the law to allow the shooting of protected species. Last winter, 45 wolves were legally shot in two short months under this modified legislation and a second cull is planned for September which will last 5 months this time. Ibex and beaver will be next if this legislation is adopted. The Swiss government is belatedly holding a Consultation and the deadline has been set for this Friday. I am appealing at the 11th hour for any NGO to please sign the report. You can sign here -- https://lnkd.in/e3sT3vQy. 44 have already done so. Please scroll down and add the name of your NGO and the country in which you are based. Thank you so much. And a special thanks to Dave Brooks, editor extraordinaire.
