On June 19th, in collaboration with Greenwishing.ch, we successfully hosted an enlightening Panel and Workshop event at HeadsQuarter in Zürich.
We were thrilled to see so many engaged participants eager to delve into the world of sustainability, exploring the pressing issues of #GreenWishing, #GreenWashing, and #GreenHushing.
The event featured a dynamic panel moderated by Martina Bühler with Prof. Dr. Johanna Gollnhofer, Johanna Pfäffli, and Miklós Veszprémi, PhD, MBA followed by a workshop with Olivia Dahinden von Polarstern AG. Engaging with an interested audience, the discussion covered how companies should handle these topics today and in the future.
Here are some key takeaways from the event:
1. In-depth Analysis of #GreenWashing: Panelists emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in corporate sustainability practices, urging companies to commit to genuine environmental impact beyond superficial claims.
2. Insights from Miklós Veszprémi, PhD, MBA (Climate & Sustainability Expert Consultant, BCG):
* Compared sustainability approaches in Switzerland vs. UAE, highlighting incremental improvements versus transformational changes.
* Discussed "greenhushing" positively, where companies' marketing doesn’t yet reflect their significant sustainability efforts (e.g., Tecan, Swiss Post, SBB CFF FFS, Baloise CH).
* Explained the benefits of high-quality carbon credits in lowering decarbonization costs and sequestering carbon sooner.
3. European Parliament Directive: The panel discussed the new directive aimed at improving product labeling and banning misleading environmental claims like "environmentally friendly," "natural," "biodegradable," "climate neutral," or "eco" unless substantiated. This move is a significant step towards combating GreenWashing, though Switzerland’s response remains minimal.
4. "Advertising Review Workshop": Participants evaluated advertisements from major Swiss corporations to determine if their environmental claims were substantial or merely marketing tactics, focusing on the central question: "Is this already greenwashing?”.
This event was a powerful reminder of the importance of integrity in our sustainability efforts. As we navigate these complex challenges, it's crucial to remain committed to transparency, accountability, and genuine environmental impact. 🌱💚
Many thanks to our speakers, participants, and everyone who made this event a success!
