As the 2024 session of the UN General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament and International Security comes to an end, some diplomats have described it as one of the most tense in many years, yet there was still a modicum of progress in a number of areas. ICAN was also present and busy, meeting with most delegations, co-hosting side events, working to advance the TPNW and pushing back against nuclear threats- it’s been a busy few weeks. Amidst growing global tensions, it's crucial that world leaders remember the unacceptably high costs of a nuclear strike. We're pleased to see the United Nations vote to produce a new study on the impacts of nuclear war - the first in 35 years. The results to come will reaffirm what countless experts have been saying for decades: nuclear war leaves no winners.

More nuclear rhetoric from senior Iranians suggests the country might develop weapons. This would breach its commitments under the #NPT. It should be ruled out by the Tehran government. Congratulations to all involved in the incredible town hall meeting in Belgium 🇧🇪 on nuclear weapons and the heightened threat level in Europe. The participants not only heard from political leaders but also from civil society representatives, and expert voices. The forum discussed the risks we face and how we can work together to prevent nuclear escalation, we look forward to more collaborations with our Belgian partners! #NuclearBan

The UN General Assembly has just voted by a large majority for a new UN study on the effects a nuclear war would have on the world. The last study was done 35 years ago, so this is sorely needed given how much has changed since 1989. Only 3 countries voted against - guess who? Russia, France and Britain. Shameful. It’s as if they don’t want their citizens, and the rest of the world, to be able to make an informed judgment on whether these are legitimate weapons to possess. I wonder why ….

How do nuclear weapons production and testing impact the environment? What do we know about how radiation (from nuclear weapons) affects individual organisms and species populations? Can the environmental damage caused by nuclear weapons be remediated? ICAN is at the big biodiversity meeting in Cali, Colombia #COP16 to connect the dots between these issues, and we've put the answers to these questions and more in a handy little FAQ: https://lnkd.in/dy-4mcmW
