During a recent event organized by BioValley Basel at the Biozentrum, University of Basel, experts from the entire life sciences sector discussed the future of innovation in our region. The conversation, moderated by Matthias Staehelin and Sara Núñez-Garcia, PhD, MBA Garcia, shed light on some key points about culture, talent, and the next steps we have to take in scaling our ecosystem to the next level. 💡 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱 As Christian Elias Schneider, Managing Director of the Innovation Office at the University of Basel, put it: "We are moving from a mindset where entrepreneurship is actively wished for, and as University we need to step up our game to be among the top". Though, as Karin Sartorius from the Office for Economics and Labor of Basel-Stadt emphasized, the entrepreneurial mindset has still some room to grow - and the government is there to support with instruments and framework conditions. While Basel may have all the necessary ingredients for an industry, talent, academia, start-ups, and capital, the challenge now is how to grow these and build intrapreneurship in established companies. 🌐 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 For Marina Udier-Blagovic Udier, CEO of Nouscom , it is the critical gap regarding scale in comparison to markets like the US. Start-ups need to operate on a bigger scale to move up the biotech ladder and be able to attract talent more easily. Simon Ittig, CEO of T3 Pharmaceuticals AG, underlined the need to have more young companies and serial entrepreneurs driving the region forward. The discussion also touched upon the need for early-stage funding to support these growing enterprises. 🔭 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗹'𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 Looking forward, the speakers shared the sentiment that Basel really should be the world's leading place for life sciences innovation. Different opinions exist on how exactly this can happen—whether it's better collaboration, more funding, instilling the spirit into the next generation of entrepreneurs or even leave things "as is" (as suggested by Nigel Sheail from Versant Ventures) and let it organically grow. We’re excited to celebrate the launch of the BaselCircular Initiative, a joint effort by Kanton Basel-Stadt and the Eckenstein-Geigy Stiftung. This initiative is a clear example of the power of public-private partnerships in driving sustainable and circular practices. A few highlights: 🤝 Kaspar Sutter and Gabriel Eckenstein emphasized the importance of collective action, highlighting that only through collaboration can we develop concrete solutions to today’s environmental and social challenges . 🕰️ André Hoffmann stressed that the time to act is now—responsibility lies with both companies and individuals to create meaningful impact. 💡The roundtable discussion with Sabine Bellefeuille-Burri, Thomas Wüthrich, and Reto Baumgartner expanded the conversation to include social circularity. They highlighted that sustainability isn’t just about resources but also about valuing human capital. Entrepreneurship should focus on creating value for the future, not just financial returns, which is the original spirit of the original humanist entrepreneurs from Basel! This partnership reflects the University of Basel's commitment to enabling innovation that addresses societal challenges, fostering collaboration across academia, industry, and public sectors. As Innovation Office, we are proud to be a partner of the initiative and that our team member, Sophie Schumacher is part of the BaserCircular team!
