Human rights abuses overshadow Zimbabwe’s SADC chairmanship The recently concluded Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government Summit, where President Emmerson Mnangagwa assumed the chairmanship, has faced criticism from civil society organisations as a mere PR exercise. This comes amidst a wave of arrests of human rights activists in Zimbabwe, who now face charges related to violence and planned protests against the regime. By the summit's start, over 160 activists had been arrested and denied bail. Dzikamai Bere, director of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association, expressed concerns in an interview with France24 about the crackdown on pro-democracy voices under Mnangagwa's leadership, labelling the summit as potentially just a PR stunt. Bere called for the immediate release of all political prisoners and an end to repression. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch also urged authorities to halt the crackdown, investigate allegations of torture, and hold those responsible accountable. They called on SADC to demand an end to the human rights assault as leadership transitions to Mnangagwa. Prominent figures such as Senator Jameson Timba and rights defender Namatai Kwekweza are among those arrested. Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe has reiterated the government’s determination to suppress dissent. The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) condemned ongoing human rights violations and called for democratic reforms, reaffirming its commitment to a democratic Zimbabwe. Despite challenges, CiCZ continues to serve as a voice for the voiceless in the region. #Zimbabwe #IHRC #IHRCNews #World #Asia #Africa #Europe #America #Switzerland #Interpol #Humanrights #Humanity #HumanityFirst #RafalWasik #Diplomacy #UnGeneva #Unitednations #UnitedNationsHumanRights #Un #Eu #Unhcr #IHRCPress #Press #PressFreedom https://lnkd.in/gQFPSg7Y

IHRC Delivers Urgent Aid to 1,200 Flood Victims in Mirsari On August 26, 2024, the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC), together with Lions Club International, carried out a humanitarian action to aid people affected by flooding in the remote Mirsari region of Bangladesh. The initiative, co-led by Peace Ambassador and National Coordinator of IHRC in Bangladesh, Mohammed Elias Serazi, aimed to support 1,200 residents of this region who found themselves in a difficult situation following the devastating catastrophe. As part of the effort, ready meals were distributed to those in need, providing a direct response to the severe consequences of the flood. Floods in Bangladesh, caused by heavy rains and monsoons, affect millions of people annually, particularly in coastal areas like Mirsari. Water inundates homes, destroys infrastructure and farmland, and cuts residents off from basic resources such as food, clean water, and medical care. Humanitarian actions, such as those organised by IHRC and Lions Club International, play a critical role in crisis situations by providing immediate aid in the form of food, which is essential for survival in the first, most difficult days following a disaster. Local volunteers, including AZM Saiful Islam Totol, Zillur Rahman, Dawued Abir, Alauddin Refat, and Aynul Chowfhury, actively participated in the support mission. Representatives from Lions Club International, including engineers Kamrul Alom and Rashedul Bari Sheblu, also played an important role in coordinating and implementing the aid program. Thanks to their commitment, they were able to effectively reach those most affected by the flood, even in hard-to-access areas. The humanitarian assistance provided by the International Human Rights Commission is crucial for communities that lose access to basic resources due to natural disasters. The ready meals distributed to the residents of Mirsari were one of the most important forms of support, especially during the initial phase of the crisis, when the local community’s situation is at its most dire. Thanks to the involvement of IHRC and local partners, the effects of the disaster were alleviated, and direct assistance was provided in one of the hardest-hit areas. The volunteers demonstrated tremendous dedication, reaching every individual in need. This operation was an excellent example of how joint efforts between international organisations and local leaders can significantly improve the living conditions of those affected by catastrophe. The involvement of the International Human Rights Commission highlights the importance of global solidarity during times of crisis. Thanks to this, thousands of people who have lost everything receive real assistance, helping them survive the most difficult moments and giving them hope to rebuild their lives after the disaster. Promoting allegations of human rights violations in your own country based on assumptions and speculations without solid evidence is a disservice to your nation. True loyalty lies in finding ways to prevent human rights violations through education and awareness campaigns, rather than amplifying unverified claims. Human rights violations occur globally, and while we may not be able to stop them entirely, we can work to prevent them by spreading awareness and promoting education. #humanrights #HumanRightsViolations #Humanitarian #humanity Mohammad Mohsin Durrani

Bangladesh Government to ensure accountability for those responsible for human rights violations The reinstatement of a quota system for civil service allocations sparked initially peaceful student protests in Bangladesh in mid-June 2024. However, these demonstrations were soon followed by violent incidents and severe human rights violations by security forces. It is believed that hundreds were killed, including at least 32 children, and thousands more were injured. Strong evidence suggests that security forces employed unnecessary and disproportionate force in handling the situation, with reports of extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, torture, and severe restrictions on freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly. This report, compiled by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, provides a preliminary overview of the key human rights violations and concerns related to the recent events in Bangladesh. It draws on data from multiple open and reliable sources, offering an initial assessment of the human rights issues that emerged during the protests and the state’s response from July until 6 August 2024. Due to significant restrictions on internet access and communication disruptions during this period, the report’s findings are not exhaustive. The report includes several recommendations for the Interim Government, urging accountability for those responsible for human rights violations, in accordance with Bangladesh’s international human rights obligations and the right of victims to effective remedies. It also offers recommendations to the international community aimed at de-escalating tensions, preventing recurrence through security sector and other priority reforms, and ensuring a democratic, peaceful, and inclusive transition in alignment with human rights principles. Taliban has faced widespread accusations of human rights abuses Since taking power in Afghanistan in 2021, the Taliban has faced widespread accusations of human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings and harsh restrictions on women’s rights. International reports indicate that the Taliban has targeted over 100 former Afghan officials in acts of retaliation, with many others still imprisoned. The Taliban is also accused of stifling dissent and consolidating power by imprisoning or killing former government officials and prosecutors. They have released convicted terrorists from prisons while detaining members of the previous administration. Women’s rights have been especially impacted under Taliban rule. In 2021, the Taliban nullified all divorce decrees, effectively denying women the right to divorce. International reports further allege that women have endured violence and abuse in Taliban-controlled prisons, with some cases resulting in death. These developments have contributed to a severe humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, putting millions of lives at risk. Many former female judges and prosecutors remain among those seeking justice. The Taliban’s actions have sparked significant concerns about human rights violations and the broader stability of the region.
