With human rights defenders, we work for a world that is more just, equal and sustainable for all.
Info
The International Service for Human Rights (ISHR) is an independent, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights. We achieve this by supporting human rights defenders, strengthening human rights systems, and leading and participating in coalitions for human rights change. We work to support human rights defenders at the international and regional levels because we understand that their work is essential to protect human rights and the rule of law on the ground. We work to strengthen international and regional human rights systems because we have seen their potential to ensure accountability for human rights violations and contribute to concrete human rights change. And we build, lead and support networks and coalitions because our experience demonstrates that organisations which work in strategic partnerships are the most effective in achieving positive and sustainable change. Over the last 40 years, ISHR has developed a comprehensive toolbox of tactics to achieve human rights change. We conduct research and analysis and undertake policy development and lobbying. We provide training, capacity building, strategic advice, technical assistance and networking support to human rights defenders and NGOs. We conduct strategic advocacy and litigation at the international and regional levels. We engage in media advocacy and commentary. And we provide protective profiling and publicity for human rights defenders. Celebrating the #UNDay 🇺🇳 🎉 ! On this important day, we reiterate the need for a robust multilateral system. We call on States to: ✦︎ Recognise and protect human rights defenders. ✦︎ Ensure the meaningful participation of civil society and human rights defenders, free from the fear of reprisals. ✦︎ Fund adequately the human rights pillar. ✦︎ Address the triple planetary crisis: make it a priority! ✦︎ Reform the Security Council so it acts in the face of atrocity crimes. We have seen the limitations of a system centred on and led by States. In this moment of opportunity, the only way forward is one that is inclusive of all stakeholders. This is the ‘multistakeholderism’ we need! Read the article: https://lnkd.in/de9rrtSb

States at the UN General Assembly did not support Saudi Arabia’s candidacy to the Human Rights Council. For ISHR Programme Director Tess McEvoy, once again, this underscores the power of and real need for competitive elections at the UN: ‘States with genuine commitments to human rights must take elections to key UN bodies seriously and run whenever possible.’ Read more: https://lnkd.in/eQCWHzud
