📌 Call for abstracts: 10th BHR Young Researchers Summit! Are you a PhD candidate or early postdoc engaging in research relating to #BizHumanRights? Then this conference is for you! We are looking for ongoing research projects in the field of business and human rights. We welcome submissions from different disciplines, including management, ethics, law, global affairs or other, and encourage scholars from all parts of the world to apply. When? Thursday, 4th – Friday, 5th September 2025 Where? University of St. Gallen, Switzerland Partial travel stipends are available for participants traveling from outside of Europe. Food and lodging will be provided for the duration of the conference. We co-host the conference together with Institute for Business Ethics, St.Gallen (IWE-HSG), NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights, and Business and Human Rights Journal.   🌐 The Summit will bring together approximately 10-15 excellent Ph.D. students to present their research project in an interdisciplinary, collaborative workshop setting, with a focus on paper development. Papers should outline research-in progress, be single-authored, and must not be under consideration for publication at the time of presentation. 📣 CALL FOR APPLICATIONS Business and Human Rights - Master thesis and research stay in Brazil In March this year, Prof. Florian Wettstein, co-director of the Institute for Business Ethics, St.Gallen (IWE-HSG), kicked off the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Business and Human Rights (BHR JM CoE), based at FECAP as a guest lecturer. In addition to the keynote address, prof. Wettstein also led a workshop for university lecturers and visited the rectorate. As a result of this visit, Fecap and the Institute for Business Ethics, in cooperation with the Institute of Management in Latin America, are launching a joint call targeting the University of St.Gallen master candidates interested in a research stay in São Paulo. The Jean Monnet Centre (BHR JM CoE) and the Institute for Business Ethics, St.Gallen (IWE-HSG) offer a position for two (2) short-term visiting researchers. Interested researchers may opt for 4 to 6 weeks (without stipend) or a 3-month stay (with a small stipend of CHF 3000 that can be obtained if the candidate extends the stay to collaborate with the Institute of Management in Latin America - University of St.Gallen). The positions are designed to offer applicants the opportunity to research and work on their master thesis on a topic that aligns with the main areas of research of the Centre and under the guidance of a co-supervisor from the BHR Team (https://lnkd.in/dBXT6P_X). Great opportunity for early-career researchers: The Hans Christoph Binswanger #Fellowship at the University of St.Gallen The Fellowship includes a nine-month research visit at the University of St. Gallen and is endowed with financial support of CHF 90,000. The selected winner of the fellowship also receives the Hans Christoph Binswanger Prize. This fellowship and prize are intended for early-career researchers in social sciences and humanities. Eligible candidates are those nearing the completion of their doctorate, in the post-doctoral phase, or holding a temporary academic position as early-career researchers (e.g., junior professorship or tenure-track position). Those with permanent academic positions are excluded from applying. «Die Annahme, dass #Menschenrechte nur Regierungen etwas angehen, lässt sich schon lange nicht mehr aufrechterhalten. Auch Unternehmen stehen in der Pflicht – moralisch und immer mehr auch rechtlich. Jüngst hat die EU dazu eine verbindliche Direktive erlassen, die die Unternehmenslandschaft in dieser Hinsicht nachhaltig verändern wird», sagt Prof. Dr. Florian Wettstein vom Institute for Business Ethics, St.Gallen (IWE-HSG). Seine Forschungsarbeit an der Schnittstelle von Wirtschaft und Menschenrechten zeigt Wirkung, wie die neue Partnerschaft des Unternehmens dormakaba mit Save the Children Switzerland zeigt. Das Unternehmen verpflichtet sich, Kinderarbeit in Kobaltminen zu bekämpfen. Initiiert wurde die Kooperation durch den 2023 von der dormakaba in Auftrag gegebenen Bericht «Tracing Cobalt in Fragmented Supply Chains». Dieser hatte gezeigt, dass der Abbau von Kobalt oft unter Einsatz von Kinderarbeit geschieht. Menschenrechtsverletzungen mit Unternehmensbeteiligung ereignen sich nicht nur, aber mehrheitlich im globalen Süden. Den damit verbundenen Fragen geht das im Jahr 2020 gegründete Competence Center for African Research am Institut für Wirtschaftsethik der University of St.Gallen nach.

In Kollaboration mit Prof. Markus Scholz (Technische Universität Dresden) befragten Prof. Thomas Beschorner und Prof. Andreas Herrmann die Industrie- und Handelskammern sowie Handwerkskammern in Deutschland nach ihren Positionen zum Thema #Rechtsextremismus. Das Ergebnis: die bisherige Zurückhaltung der Kammern erklärt sich aus einem auferlegten Neutralitätsgebot, das im Falle von Freiheit und Demokratie einer kritischen Hinterfragung bedarf. Die Europäische Union ist nach den Wahlen vom vergangenen Wochenende weiter nach rechts gerückt. Gerade jetzt ist auch die Wirtschaft gefordert, sich zu demokratischen Werten zu bekennen und einen Beitrag für die Zukunft einer offenen Gesellschaft zu leisten.    Mit welchen konkreten Maßnahmen dies geschehen kann, zeigt unsere „Landkarte des Handelns“. So veranschaulichen wir z.B. im Handlungsfeld „Unternehmenswerte und Verantwortung“, wie Unternehmen eine strategische Basis schaffen können:    💬 Praktisches, verantwortungsvolles Unternehmertum kann nur auf der Basis profunder Unternehmenswerte realisiert werden. Sie markieren einen normativen Kompass des Unternehmerischen, denn sie sind grundlegend für strategische Entscheidungen ebenso wie im tagtäglichen operativen Geschäft.    Demokratische Werte sind wesentlich für einen solchen Kompass.
