Working on climate change often brings a lot of bad news, but the green transition offers many positive aspects as well 🌱. Recent research from Shortlist Futures, FSD Africa, and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on "𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝗯𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮" (https://lnkd.in/dbHaRS56) highlights that Africa has the potential to create 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟱𝟬 📈, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟯 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬 across key sectors such as energy ⚡, agriculture 🌾, and manufacturing 🏭. We share the idea that 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 of a politically and economically viable pathway to 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 🌍. ♻Topics like circular economy, sustainable leadership, humanitarian logistics, a visit to the energy bank in Hamburg, a lot of fun and cultural exchange: a recap of DAAD Summer School for Sustainability.✍⬇ 🤝This July KLU hosted a Summer School on Sustainability within the Centre of African Excellence for Sustainable Operations for Resource Management and Food Supply (SCO) 🌱 . The Summer School was organized in collaboration with LEARN Logistics | by Kühne Foundation and funded by DAAD. The Summer School brought together 19 students Master's Students from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), the University of Nairobi, and the KLU, the majority of the students are currently enrolled in the two joint Master of Business Research (MBR) and Master in Sustainable Management in Operations (SuMO), which are developed within the SCO center. The main aim of the school was to equip students with valuable knowledge and tools to positively impact of business on the environment and society. 🎓Lectures were held by KLU professors and researchers – Profs. Maria Besiou, Andreas K. Gernert, Arne Heinold, Franziska Lauenstein, Shushu Liao, Moritz Petersen, Ramón van Almsick – as well as business and policy experts – Julius Kipngetich (Jubilee Holdings), Mark Major (Climate Centre, Kühne Foundation), Daniel Vaheb (Körber Technologies) -- focused on theoretical and practical aspects of sustainability from multiple disciplines, ranging from circular economy to supply chain management sustainable policies, Africa’s role in the 21st century, sustainable leadership and finances, as well as humanitarian logistics. 🚎 Alongside the lectures, students visited the Energieberg and Energiebunker in Hamburg – Willhelmsburg, which both provide sustainable energy and public recreational spaces🌳. Remarkably, both are repurposed spaces that were inaccessible to the public. The Energiebunker was part of Hamburg’s defensive infrastructure of Hamburg in the 2nd World War, which was then destroyed by the Allies. The Energieberg, built on top of a landfill, protects the environment from hazardous liquids.🌍 Altogether an amazing experience for the students, professors, and staff involved. We cannot wait for a new future collaboration! 🤩

Our report, produced in cooperation with the SLOCAT Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport, highlights significant gaps in current Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Long-Term Strategies (LTS). What steps are needed to scale up climate action in freight transport and logistics? Find out more below 👇

📌 There are significant gaps in the current approach to freight transport and logistics within #NDCs and Long-Term Strategies (#LTS). 💡 What should third-generation NDCs and new LTS include to scale up climate ambition and action on #freight #transport and #logistics? 1️⃣ A transport-related GHG mitigation target in addition to the common economy-wide emissions mitigation target. 2️⃣ Feature balanced, integrated and intermodal actions for freight transport across the Avoid-Shift-Improve framework. 3️⃣ Actions across all freight modes: road transport, urban freight, railways, inland waterways, domestic and international aviation and maritime transport, as well as necessary intermodal ports and terminal infrastructure. 4️⃣ Actions to enhance the adaptation to climate change and the resilience of freight transport infrastructure. 🔖 Read the analysis by SLOCAT produced in cooperation with Kuehne Climate Center and learn more➡️ https://shorturl.at/C1pLf
