#NewMember Clelia holds both a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences and a Master's degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Milan. After completing her studies, she spent a year at Policlinico di Milano, focusing on pancreatic cancer research, where she gained valuable experience in oncological research and its clinical applications. In late 2022, Clelia began her Ph.D. at the University Hospital of Zurich, joining the research group of Dr. Ralph Fritsch. Her research centers on investigating acquired resistance in BRAFV600E metastatic colorectal cancer, with the goal of advancing therapeutic strategies. Beyond the lab, Clelia is a passionate traveler who embraces diverse cultures and ways of life. When she’s not exploring new places, you might find her trekking, bouldering, or skiing in the Swiss mountains—or, on a more relaxed day, enjoying an Aperol Spritz with friends. #Team #LifeScience #UZH #ETH #ETHZurich #LSZYSN

We strive to connect life scientists to career opportunities beyond academia.
Info
The Life Science Zurich Young Scientist Network (LSZYSN) is a non-profit organization created and run by a group of graduate students/post-docs of the University and the ETH Zurich. It was created by fusion of the Swiss branch of the Young European Biotech Network and the Life Science Zurich Biotech Network. It operates under the wing of Life Science Zurich, a joint initiative of UZH and ETH aiming to promote excellence in life sciences in Switzerland, and its main mission is to connect life scientists to career opportunities beyond academia. To achieve this the LSZYSN is engaged in a wide range of activities aiming to build sustainable relationships with companies operating in the life sciences/healthcare sphere and to promote networking. In addition to that the LSZYSN is committed to providing a collection of industry-related resources and to hosting events to allow its members to explore the world of biotechnology and to stimulate constructive interactions between people from various life science sectors. We envision that our efforts will contribute to the formation of a well-informed, competitively skilled and well-connected local and global life science community.

#NewMember Anja earned her Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences and Technology from ETH Zürich in 2021. She went on to complete her Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering at ETH Zürich in 2023. For her MSc thesis, she explored the interactions between platelets and coagulation factors, focusing on how these interactions influence platelet function. In 2023, Anja began her PhD in the Laboratory of Applied Mechanobiology under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Viola Vogel at ETH Zürich. Her research focuses on understanding the role of platelet mechanics in coagulation, particularly in the context of Hemophilia A. In her free time, Anja enjoys running, dancing, and analog photography. #Team #LifeScience #UZH #ETH #ETHZurich #LSZYSN

#NewMember Originally from the small Northern coastal town of Gijón, Spain, Álvaro has had quite an international and multicultural upbringing. Spending much of his youth in Geneva, Switzerland before attaining his Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, in 2020, which included a short stay during the summer of 2019 in Paris, France. In 2020, he returned to Switzerland to complete his Master's degree in Biology, Majoring in Cell Biology, at ETH Zürich. He began his doctoral journey in 2023 at the Medical Oncology and Haematology department of the University Hospital Zurich, under the supervision of Dr. Corina Schneidawind. His research focuses on establishing patient-specific, modelling systems of “indefinite” in vitro growth, for aggressive acute lymphoblastic and myeloid leukemias to drive the push for the enhanced personalization of oncology. Outside of the academic field, Álvaro enjoys music, reading and writing, athletics, travelling and exploring the world and above all, spending quality time with family and friends. #Team #LifeScience #UZH #ETH #ETHZurich #LSZYSN

#LSZYSN #BehindTheScenes Today we are sharing a little of what is going on behind the scenes. While we are busy planning #ZLSD2025 and other events like the #CareerChat #MindSet or #CompanyVisits we are also interested in improving our own skill sets! Last week we had the pleasure of participating in the #workshop "Improv for Scientists" given to us by Eisha Mhatre from The Experimentalist. We had a creative evening improvising and getting to know different techniques to be capable of correctly responding in certain common situations of daily lab routine. What a blast! If you are interested in #ScienceCommunication #Improv and enjoy doing something different for a change, check out their program!

#MindSet2024 Only 1 day left until our Mindset Panel discussion “From Labs To Legislation: Breaking Antimicrobial Resistance”! Antimicrobial Resistance is a serious public health issue and is estimated to bring a significant strain on economies worldwide. According to WHO estimates, antimicrobial resistance will take 40 million lives by 2050. So, how are we as a society responding? Is it still possible to avert the AMR crisis? Join our panel discussion tomorrow (10th of October) at 6 p.m to hear from our four experts in pharmaceutical research, policy making, venture capital and healthcare and learn more about AMR and their perspectives. After the discussion, we will host an Apéro, providing you with the opportunity to continue the conversation and network with the panelists and participants. Hello from the Career Chat team! Our events aim to introduce you to diverse job opportunities as life scientists! Around 5 times a year, we invite one or more speakers to tell us about their career paths: what their job entails and how they arrived at that stage. If you are unsure what you want to do after graduation - come and visit our career chats! The presentation is always followed by an apero to enable networking with the speaker(s) and attendees, as well as provide you with a more relaxed atmosphere to ask individual questions about anything career-related. #TeamIntroductions #CareerChat #CC #UZH #ETH #ETHZurich #LSZYSN

#CompanyVisit #AstraZeneca This week we had the great opportunity to visit AstraZeneca in Baar! It was an inspiring afternoon where we learnt more about AstraZeneca and what it is like to work there. They are driven by their patients’ needs and put science at the centre of their work. To finish the afternoon we had the chance to network over coffee and pastries. Follow us on social media to keep up to date with our events and keep an eye out for our next company visit! #Networking #Career #Opportunity #Industry #LifeScience #UZH #ETH #ETHZurich #LSZYSN
