3D-IC for the masses? Not just yet. 3D-IC and chiplets have the semiconductor industry buzzing with excitement, promising higher performance, lower power consumption and modularity. Yet, despite the potential, the reality is far more complex. ↳Technical and economic hurdles have kept 3D-IC adoption limited to a handful of companies—mainly in data centers and AI applications. ↳Heterogeneous integration isn't as seamless as envisioned, with compatibility challenges across different nodes and design methodologies. ↳The cost equation still favors monolithic chips for most mainstream applications, leaving mobile and consumer markets hesitant to make the leap. So, where do we go from here? As demand for AI and high-performance computing skyrockets, 3D-IC remains a necessity for industry leaders—but for the masses, the path is still being paved. Did you happen to catch Marvell Technology's earnings from a couple days ago? Blew past guidance on $1.8 billion in its FY25 Q4, representing a 20% sequential increase and a 27% YoY increase. The growth was fueled by the datacenter market, which saw a 78% YoY increase. Custom silicon that addresses hyperscalers needs around both AI and general compute is a huge, profitable market. And Marvell is riding the wave. As good as its last quarter was, Marvell is guiding to a strong FY26 1Q as this custom silicon has hit volume production and continues to secure design wins in the largest datacenters. While there is so much spotlight on the usual silicon suspects in AI and cloud, keep an eye on companies like Marvell. Companies like this deliver the bespoke silicon that translates into performance and cost optimizations across the hyperscalers environments. https://lnkd.in/gvKiihYe
